Can the existing glow plug relay be used with the new OEM metal glow plugs?

From what I read, when you upgrade to the new glow plugs (which have a different voltage requirement than the old ceramic plugs), a new relay is required AND the ECU has to be reprogrammed to the new voltage. Kieth from GD can do the change to your ECU if you have a tune from him. You have to do this in the right sequence otherwise you can blow the ECU up because of the voltage change to the new plugs.

The Glow Plug Module has to be replaced and the ECU re-programmed before connecting power to the new 5 volt plugs. :)

If you go with the OEM 5v replacement plugs from what I've seen they are sold as a "kit" of 4 plugs and a controller for like $125 last I looked.

If you replace the original 7v plugs with 7v metal there is no other requirements needed (drop in replacement) This is what i want to do, but they cost more and harder to get.
7V Steel ETEcno1 P/N GX3123 direct original replacement

If you replace the original 7v plugs with 5v metal, Yes a relay and flash to your ECU is required.

Kit PN is 68090434AA and prices are all over the map right now. Drop in 7v replacements, no controller or flash needed, can be obtained from http://www.dieselglowplug.com/gx3123-di ... svli5qq877 . Depending on $ vs Euro they run about $180 for 4 delivered, can use Visa/MC, and delivery seems to take a week or two via regular shipping.

Yes papaindigo is correct: but Just to keep it clear.

option:

1. 5v steel kit P/N 6809034AA (4ea steel GP, relay) & you need to have ECM flashed.

2. 7V steel ETEcno1 P/N GX3123 direct original replacement. No flash.

I not positive but I think GDE will GP flash the OEM ECU for $50.00.

racer and kjjet are correct but IIRC that $50 is only applicable if you already have a GDE tune.

I believe keith said that the GPflash cost was valid for an OEM ECU also, not just the GDE tune.

What is the part number of this relay you are refering to?
I do not see an relevant "relay" in the circuit diagrams...only the Glow Plug Controller. :?

Billwill, you may have hit on something. Is it a controller or a relay?

ChooChooman, I was wondering the same thing... others have mentioned that the part numbers of the old and new (relay/controller) are the same. Hence the reason for my post.

What are the part number of the old and new? I don't believe that Chrysler would revise a part without an update to the part number.

If you switch the key on and off 3 or 4 times they work fine at 10 degrees F. They seem to stay on longer than the ceramics did on the first go. I turn the key on the first time, give a 2 count, turn the key off then immediately back on for a two count, and repeat another time or two. Starts right up, not much smoke. What I would like to see is GDE developing a tune for the GPs that adds just a leetle more on time to the GPs....

I never had luck switching on and off. Actually had a witch of a time getting her started.
