Are there any lights that come on when the speedo cuts out. And does it do it at any specific time or durning anything particular? And if there are no lights or weird breaking then I have to say it is a possibly a loose connection to the dash panel.

You can test the gauges by holding in the odometer trip button while turning the ignition ON.
All cluster lights light up and the gauges move.

Your problem is probably intermittent though and happens when you hit a bump maybe so this test will probably not achieve much.

Remove the cluster by removing the two grab handles on each "A" pillar...two Torx screws.
Then carefully pry up the long plastic section that runs along the length of the windscreen......held in by clips.

You should see the screws holding the cluster in place....if I remember correctly you may have to pull off the padded panel that your knees hit on....pulls out on clips.

There is only one connector for the cluster, disconnect it and examine the cluster carefully for anything that looks loose. :)

I have had the same problem with the speedo neadle, it did it for a bit and them started working again. The only different thing is that now my Airbag light is on all the time and my Hood open sign has started up again constantly and so my Car allarm goes off randomly..
The Airbag thing worries me more, does anyone know it there is actually a recall for model up tto 2003 for the Airbag (mine was built October 2002)?

Thanks Billwill,

some added info. I once was playing with the over head display and switched it from english to metric and the speedo didn't work. messed around with it changing it back to english and it started working so it seemed in this case to be a software problem.

Today everything worked great. My problem happens right out of the parking lot I'll pull out and it's not working.

There is a recall for 2002 CRDs for airbags going off unexpectedly so you can check with the dealers.

Ideally you need to see which airbag it is complaining about....driver, passenger or side air bags.

If it is the driver air bag then you could need a new clock-spring.
I had an intermittent airbag light coming on.

On our RHD models if you remove the driver side knee panel....pull hard on the panel that you knock your knees on...you will see a cable coming down from the steering boss. This has a yellow connector on it and the connecting wires are, I think:

Orange/Light Blue, Tan/Light Blue, Black/ light Blue, Dark Green/ Light Blue.

I say 'I think" because my circuit diagrams do not show the RHD connection and I am too lazy to check on my Jeep.

This connector had a bad contact inside it...I could get the air bag light to come on by shaking this connector.

I could not fix this bad connector so eventually cut the connectors off and and directly soldedered the wires together.
This connector actually has a small metal plate inside it which shorts out all the connectors on the air bag side together to stop any back EMF setting off the air bag when the plug is pulled apart.

Have a look at this connector and see if the air bag light goes on or off if you move it...otherwise you may need to replace the clock-spring. To be on the safe side, dis-connect your battery, short the positive lead to ground for ten minutes to discharge any capacitors before working on air bag connectors.

Have you shorted out your hood open switch yet? :?

Bill,

thank you for your answer, I will have a look, but I think this is more than my capabilities allow, and then speak to Jeep dealer to sort out, at least I have now an idea what to tell them.

Saddly my Hood Warning light is still on and I haven't managed to sort it. Keep coming on and going off depending on Weather if cold or not same with the allarm (EVIC when turning the KJ on shows -39C !!!). I think I might make a big parcel of things and take it to Jeep to sort out, saddly all of this is now beond my capabilites.

I will keep you posted.
