What I do know about Marvel Mystery oil is the stuff will dissolve carbon on spark plugs etc when left to soak. I would assume it would have the same effect on soot and sludge. some older folks I know would put MMO or rislone in gasoline tanks for the carbon dissolving capabilities. What I don't know is how hot it would burn in a diesel application, or compatiblity with diesel fuel. |

I remember a long thread at tdiclub.com years ago. Its adherents claimed it would free sticky lifters. Perhaps one knowledgeable post came from a guy who served in the engine room of a USS. He said it was a derivative of oil of wintergreen. He went on to say how it (oil of wintergreen) was used often as an effective solvent aboard ship. FWIW |

My Dad ran it in his non-turbo Mercedes diesel (240 D IIRC) for years. Best I can say is it did no harm. |

If you want lubricity, look elsewhere. 2 stroke oil, many diesel fuel specific additives, and biodiesel are all superior lubricants, and MMO is not. The mystery to me is what it is good for. |

The VW guys were putting it in the oil. We were running Delvac 1 back then. I put B20 in the fuel tank for lubricity and as a solvent. (actually between 5 and 20). You can Google MMO at bitog forums. There's been a ton of discussion. . . backed up by oil analysis on occasion. |

It seems to actually reduce the lubricity of diesel fuel. I'm going to start using Opti-Lube if I can find it.  I have no idea what it would do in your crankcase. |

Ok, I've got to ask. Why are people (yes, a vague generalization) resistant to using bio-diesel. If these tests are accurate, even 2% bio (B2) is far superior to the second best. The B20 here is virgin soybean bio blended with Sinclair diesel. It costs about the same. I really like to run B100 in the CRD and TDI during summer months. It's my fuel of choice. I'm not resistant. Its just not available in my area. I use a blend of TCw3 and PowerService in my fuel. |

Well, yesterday I added 8 ounces of MMO to a full tank of diesel, my intent is to use it as a top end cleaner and not as a lube, I run pump biodiesel for that whenever I can or Power Service. I drove it for 230 miles so far and noticed that the engine sounds a lot quieter with a quicker response of the throttle. The EVIC doesn't like it though, the mileage dropped. I am amazed at how the diesel tappet sound is now less noisy and the engine smoothed out. . |

Ok Racer, give it a go. I'm not sure I ever read anything about it being a lubricant, and only once have I had a close look at the CRD rocker/roller mechanism failures. Other lifter set-ups do benefit from a good cleaning. Keep us posted. Our rocker/rollers seem to be just wearing out. The slop in the roller that leads to the abrasion of the rocker and cam damage 'seems' to be a result of insufficient detergent additives in the oil. The clogged lifter may, indeed, benefit from some solvent action. I'm going the with a high zinc additive oil to try to prevent wear that also has a detergent package engineered for LSD. It's CI-4 plus. Since nobody knows what's really going on, it seems reasonable to me. Warp2 posted the specs and grade for AMO 10/40 and I agree with his reasoning. I'd have tried something like Kreen back when I bought it. . . knowing what I know now. I used to use kerosene (aka Gunk motor flush) on a '69 small block V8 Ford (360 cid). I'd flush it every other oil change. My buddy did the same with his 350 Chevy. Our oil stayed clean all the way to the 3k mile OCI. I sold it with 200k miles and it was ready to go another 100k no problem. I just can't keep a 'diesel Jeep' that acts like an adolescent ballerina with spindly legs that may snap at any moment. Here is what I am using: Motor oil = Chevron Delo 400 Low Emission Synthetic 5W40 Oil Filter = Bosch Distance Plus #3500 oil filter ZDDP Additive = Bar Products Rislone Engine Oil Supplement with Zinc Treatment Top End Cleaner = Marvel Mystery Oil 8oz at fill up. MAF disconnected and no other modification. With the latest ECM TCM updates performed under warrantee by the dealer at Torque converter swap time last year in June. The Jeep has never sounded or driven so good. |
