Post subject: | timing belt charity case |
A year or so ago, somebody passed through here in desperate need, with a CRD late for timing belt replacement, out of work, no money but able to do their own wrenching. I'm too late to help that person, but maybe somebody else in that condition will come along. Timing belt replacement is not something to delay. We all know that if delayed to the point the belt breaks in service, the damage is very expensive. The parts needed to replace that belt are only a few hundred dollars, it is the labor for the job that bites. Last year I had the head off my CRD to replace the head gasket. As part of the process, labor charges being what they are, we went ahead and replaced the timing belt and water pump early. I now have a timing belt and water pump with 50,000 miles of service, and 50,000 miles of life remaining. If you have the money to hire someone to do the timing belt/water pump, you certainly should spring for new parts, and while you are at it, replace all the idlers. But for somebody able to do the work, and money so tight that the parts are out of reach, perhaps my used belt/pump will give you some wiggle room. I'll donate them to help a bud I haven't met yet, you need only pay for shipping. As I said above, if you are paying for the labor to replace these parts, this will not save you enough to be worth it. Cheapskates, this is not a deal for you, it is simply not cost effective because you are going to have to replace the belt again within the next 50,000 miles. But it might be a lifesaver for somebody down on their luck and handy with a wrench. Anybody interested, give me a holler. |
