Post subject:  Check engine light but no code

Background: I have cleaned the MAP, new fuel filter, recent oil change 0-40 syn. New to me at 76XXX miles.
Been driving around for 2500 miles with no issues, occasionally at idle or low throttle slight chugging hardly noticeable.

Issue: Check engine light on, no code... used autozone scanner & O'riles (Shumcks) scanner.

I hope this is not a repeat thread but i searched and did not find anything.
If the scanner is the issues which brand reads the codes from the CRD?
I read mention that it could be caused by the EGR being stuck to some extent?

Thanks for the help

I had this problem as well shortly after purchasing mine. Thankfully it turned off on mine just long enough for me to get it through "echeck" that vehicles in some counties in ohio have to pass. (fail automatically if engine light is on)

I don't know what causes it. I also used 4 different scanners with 0 success in returning a code. I think it might be related to a fuel vacuum system issue as when I would top my tank completely (let it trickle till it was all the way up the filler neck to the point that i was screwing the cap into fuel) it would usually go out most of the time but only for awhile. I would test yours this way and see if it makes a difference.

I bought mine 10 months ago and since about august ive had the map sensor unplugged so of course I have a light now. I will replug that when I change the diff fluid and do the front wheel bearings here in the next few weeks.

It has not caused a problem for me so far... but I to would like to find out what is activating the light as well.

The only thing that was out of the ordinary was that put some fuel in at a crappy station so I did not run out. However it did not turn on right after it took a few days. Currently it is being fixed because for a roof leak, but when I get it back I will try a hard reset, disconnecting the battery for 10 mins. If it was a fluke then it should not come back on right :? Oh well, when I get the Eco tune I imagine most of these problems will go away....

Just a reminder that the 05 and 06 both have slightly different kluge computer systems. What they share in common is after market scanners can generally read only "engine" codes and the generic P0700 tranny (just says the tranny system has stored a code) that's stored in the same location. Only a dealer or dealer equivalent scanner can access all things that cause a CEL.

So not all OBD2 readers can read all the codes? Which brands can?

The first thing to note is that Chrysler screwed up the OBD interface in mid 2006. There was a recall to fix this. If your vehicle hasn't been updated it won't work with any aftermarket tool. Goto jeep.com and check your recall status to make sure you are up to date. You may, however, wish to discuss any outstanding recalls here before rushing off to get them done.

As far as code readers are concerned even the ones that do work can be temperamental i.e. sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. I've had the CEL on and unable to read any codes, retry a few times and it will eventually read. Same goes for clearing. I've also seen it lock up for a period of time or often until the next restart.

I have the following:
an older Innova 3100 - very limited but works OK for basic code reading and clearing
a USB ELM327 based interface - I've tried various apps on my laptop without much success
a Bluetooth ELM327 based interface with Torque app running on an LG Optimus P500 - this is by far the best and if you already own an Android device is a no brainer.

As an update i preformed the ORM being that the light was on anywise. I used a Innova 3130C to scan after words, it came up with some weird codes like "transmission tone?" but did not give a code for the ORM. Does the ORM give off a readable code or does it erase after shut down? Do the newer Innova scanners work for our jeeps? I don't have a fancy phone to use the bluetooth version...

the ORM typically gives a P102.

also - try the code read when you first turn on the engine - that's when my scangauge will read.
after about 15-20 minutes of running - the computer kluge turns on and it won't read anything.
