So I have an annoying squeak almost like a chirp. It doesn't do it while its cold just after it warms up. It's also louder while in gear. I've replaced both idler pulleys and the tensioner assembly also the belt. So before I either change the alternator or the water pump I want some opinions. |

Does the serp belt tension bounce around at a bit above idle or is it virtually steady. If the former the alternator pulley is shot. |

If it bounces a lot at idle (mine barely twitches) you likely have a fair amount of red "dust" on the alternator pulley cap. In any case it's probable that your alternator clutch is shot, not uncommon, and that's your squeak. The clutch itself can be replaced (IDparts has it and also has the whole alternator at a reasonable price) although I understand, never done it myself, removal of the clutch is a bit of a problem. Alternatively some have been able to source a lifetime warranty alternator from like Autozone pretty cheap (ca. $150 IIRC) or http://www.maniacelectricmotors.com/ rebuilds them or used to. FYI don't go cheap on the clutch at some local shop, although they might could do the removal/install if you bring in the alternator and new clutch, as the cheaper "reactive" clutches won't hold up and a solid pulley replacement will do nasty things to other components associated with the serp belt. |

I manage an Oreilly Auto Parts so I get a very good price on it. There is not any dust or anything. |

My pulley didn't really have dust. I only determined it was the alternator after I removed the belt and spun the pulley by hand. It wobbled a lot ( no visual wobble with belt on and engine running). I have another similar squeak that I am guessing is an idler pulley (saw one that looked like some grease might have oozed out)... for sure a different sound from before so there is a difference in sound between components failing. |

UPDATE I installed the new alternator and the problem was fixed! Let's hope to god it doesn't come back as the chirping was really pissing me off lol. |

I have an annoying squeak at idle too... Much louder when in gear. I thought it sounded like it's coming from the A/C compressor clutch but maybe it's the alternator... On mine it could be anything since it was in storage next to the ocean for several months and the engine and every bolt is completely rusted. |
