Hey guys, I would appreciate some opinions in regards to my engine noise. This is a cold start from this morning, on about 40-ish F. I don't want to say anything about what I think to be wrong since I don't want to influence anybody. Please post if you hear anything not right or "funny". Youtube video with the sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyRRnuY5 ... e=youtu.be Thanks a lot! |

Hmmm...Definitely a ticking there. Tough to judge on Youtube. I'm in Medina quite often. I can take a look/listen next time I'm up that way if you would like. Did you check the fan blades for interference? Belt pulleys? |

Thanks guys. I got this car in 09 with little under 80k. Now I'm few hundreds over 120. Shortly after I got it, I heard the ticking noise. I've noticed at that time that with engine oil close to max, the tick sound diminished to the point of not being heard. I feel now that the ticking is a little louder. After hearing various members on the forum posting about rockers getting worn, I tend to believe this noise is caused by wear in the rockers (bad diesel quality and not the best diesel oil - i use Mobil 1 0w40 changed at 7ish k). Also, my mileage dropped with about 5 -6 mpg on highway, which could be explained, at least in theory, by worn rockers. Timing belt, pulleys had been also changed at 100k. There is nothing obstructing/touching the mechanical fan for sure. Billy, thanks for offering, but my crd is in Alabama now, I'm here with a contract for few months. I am definitely planning to take a look at rockers but I need the car at home, I don't have the possibility to do this in Alabama. ChooChooman, the noise is on all sides, it's just more noticeable from driver and passenger sides, in front of the car is a little muffled, but still there. |

Mine does the same thing. Sometimes it goes away. It has never gotten any worse to date. I would not worry too much about it. I, too, use M1 0w40 but change it between 3K and 4500 miles, and use a Pure One filter (see a post I did comparing the P1 filter to a Mopar filter), Air filters every other oil change, and fuel filters every 10-12K. Reason I mention these things is because I overmaintain my CRD, and still have the noise. I have the ORM and have had it since around 47K. It may be injector noise, but I cannot say for certain. I would not worry much about it. The MPG drop may be due to cold weather. Mine drops in the cold for sure. I don't always get consistent MPG either, and I always fill the same way... that is, fill to the top until you see fuel in the filler and it is not receding. |

I know, I tend to panic easily when I hear noises, lol. Now I can't do squat anyways, other than taking the crd to a shop which I'll try avoiding as much as possible. I'll take a look when I get the car home and see what I find. Thanks for answering! |

Mine sounds exactly the same with about 55K on it and a GDE tune since 35K. 5W40 Mobile-1 every 6-7K. It might be temperature dependent, as the ticking seems to come and go, although it has always been there to some degree, I think. I'm not worried about it. |

Well, in theory a cold diesel injector is much noisier than a warm one, especially a used injector. But the tick is so metallic that made me think it could be something else. All those with a bad mileage. Most diesels with worn injectors have a clung sound not a tick. But I'm not an experienced diesel mechanic either, just talking based on few diy experiences and some readings. Thanks again everybody! I think I need to loosen up a bit and see what happens later. Lol. |

I think it's ok. If you think its a injector? add some diesel fuel lube. Not 2 cycle oil. Power service at Walmart? Or other good diesel lube. |

1. It sounds like you have an injector leak. Remove injectors, replace washers and reseat injectors. 2. Send injectors out to get a good cleaning and inspection. 3. The ticking noise could be from dirty injectors. |

Agreed...send the injectors out to a good shop, if adding a good fuel additive dose not work. I run an additive in every tank. I use Lubrabor (hard to find) Also Biobor MD is great. Both made by Hammonds. ULSD has little lube in it and can plug your injectors. |

I run power service in every tank. When I replace the fuel filter around 10-15K, I fill it fill of power service additive, then purge the air and run it. I figure this will clean anything. Mine has tapped on and off like this for a long time. The PS did not help (or hurt in my opinion). I have had other diesels which made the same sort of noise from the injectors with no ill effects. |

Thanks for replying guys! I added a little oil, so now is almost to max, and I barely hear the noise. I also added some Lucas upper cylinder lubricant with injector cleaner (fuel additive gas/diesel - I used it before for other diesels with good results) and I'll go few tanks with it and see what's the deal. Since I got the car I heard the noise (but never that loud) and its more noticeable when oil level goes towards the half of min and max. If those wont work, I'll get the injectors cleaned. And if that still doesn't work, I'll take a look at rockers. Funny thing is that now I hear a vague chirp coming from the viscous, but at least that's an easy fix. |
