Our 2006 CRD became difficult to start and was running rough Feb. 2012 and it threw a check engine light. Took it to the local dealer and they replaced glow plugs. Long story, local dealer had lots of problems with the ECM, glow plug module, changing from ceramic glow plugs to metal etc. Finally got it back last spring but has been poor starting when cold ever since Feb last year. Read the Lost Jeeps NOOB guide last fall when it starting getting cold again and replaced the fuel filter head. Still had problems when starting in cold weather. Took it to a dealer in Colorado thinking maybe the starting problem was due to the installation of glow plugs, new ECM and/or glow plug module. They replaced the fuel filter head again. We took it back when we found air still at the fuel filter head. They could not find any leaks in the fuel lines. After a lot of testing, they are saying that all of the injectors are bad. One injector was returning too much fuel and it was bleeding the system down. They replaced that injector and we drove it home and still had a problem starting it when it was cold. Returned it to the dealer in Colorado. The Chrysler engineer had the mechanic take the exhaust manifold off and they cold started it. They said that there was smoke pouring out of the 3 cylinders where the injectors were not replaced which they said indicated that the 3 remaining injectors were dumping too much fuel into the cylinders and now they want to replace the remaining 3 injectors. What could cause 4 injectors to go out? I have read that air in the fuel is hard on the injectors, could this have been the problem? I also heard that putting gas into a diesel would also damage the injectors. We bought our CRD in 2008 with 35,000 miles on it [it has slightly less than 60,000 miles now], could have the previous owners damaged the engine with gas and the problem would show up later? Replacing all 4 injectors on a diesel engine with less than 60,000 without knowing what might have caused the problem doesn't make a lot of sense to us. Thanks for any help

For what it's worth:
1. if you are in or near Colorado I'd be talking to Sir Sam and not a dealer as Sam has redone a bunch of these.
2. injectors, if bad, can be rebuilt not replaced.
3. one does not check injector output the way the dealer did. See the 05 FSM pg 14-47 for the proper procedure.
4. have they bothered to pull codes and/or check the fuel quantity or fuel pressure solenoid or inspected the base of the 3 older injectors for leaky "O" rings or crush washers.
5. if you have continuous air in the fuel filter head then it's a statement of fact not subject to dealer debate that you have air getting into the system at the filter head or between the filter head and the fuel tank. Filter head sources a) improperly tightened filter (includes failure to remove inner old gasket when installing new) or WIF sensor, b) leaky fuel bleeder; c) leaky seal on primer pump; d) failure to fully tighten fuel supply and outlet lines on filter head; and e) leaky quick disconnect fittings on the fuel lines which I REPEAT MYSELF cannot be tested by applying pressure as all that does is make the quick disconnect fitting seals, which are designed for the gasser system that works under pressure, seat better. The only fix(s) I know of for the quick disconnect fittings are in order of expense a) replace them with clamps and high quality diesel compatable marine grade fuel line; b) install an inline lift pump near the tank or in the engine bay; or c) replace the intank fuel level sender unit with a combined in tank fuel pump and fuel lever sender.

By the way while glow plugs could relate to hard starting if they fail in which case they throw a CEL and code but shouldn't have anything to do with rough running once warmed up. By the way does your temp gauge sit just a hair left of vertical? If not your tstat is shot and that won't help running.

I'll defer to others but as far as I know gas in a diesel will just cause it to quit running. Once system is flushed of the gas there should be no harm. As to air in the lines harming injectors I have no opinion.

The 5 volt glow plugs do not start the engine as well as teh stock 7 volt ceramics did. This is something you might have to live with. If you really need 3 more injectors give us a call, we have new ones in stock and we sell for much less than a dealer would charge.

If you want to keep the CRD running well, then contact SirSam and have him go at it. .

Clearly you've been dealing with wrenches whose method of fixing things is to throw parts (and your money) at a problem until it goes away. You definitely need to have Sir Sam look at it.

Wrenches who actually do the work of testing to find the problem are worth their weight in gold. Wrenches who do the part throwing thing are sadly a dime a dozen these days, and not worth that, IMHO.
