What is this little filter for? Reminds me of a lawn mower fuel filter. Its located behind the airbox, seems like a vaccum port area?! There is nothing connected to the bottom.

That is the "boost pressure soloniod filter" which is to be replaced every 50k miles, but good luck finding a replacement.

Could you just buy a 2 stroke fuel filter? or is it something special? Thanks for the info though! I was wondering what needed filtered air.

I wouldn't worry about it unless it is damaged. While I don't know for sure, I imagine air is going both ways through the filter which would blow the filtered dirt off.

If you are worried, I am sure it can be ordered for you, I also believe any hose type filter the you can easily blow through would work just fine.

It's easy enough to find and costs less than $10 although IMHO if it looks clean at 50K forget about it. If you want to do a DIY replacement all it is is a small engine filter with the outside end ventilated a bit.

I have never changed it in 10 years and don't think it has to be changed, all it does is prevent dirt from entering the vacuum valves that control boost (on 2002-2004 EGR valve) and heater position doors.....did you never hear the 'pfffrrrrrrrrrr' after shutting the engine down? That's when your KJ looses vacuum pressure trough this filter (it sucks in ambiant air).
