Post subject:  Head Gasket Thickness Question - Job Completed -

I know it has been discussed before but I couldn't locate any pics showing where the holes are suppose to be located. I understand it should be on the intake side of the gasket but I see no holes there and no p/n. There is 1 hole though on the R/H Aft part of the gasket and when I put a micrometer to it I measured it at 1.42mm which is the 1 hole measurement. I'm hoping to verify this is correct before I order.

Thanks

It's a tab sticking out the side.

a. No hole
b. one hole
c. two hole

I believe that yours is a no hole and if you take the gasket to the Jeep parts department, they can match it.

OK I will ask the dumb question. Why on earth is there 3 different head gasket thicknesses? Will the thickness of gasket needed change if one changes the TTY head studs to ARP?

It "used to be" 3 engine rebuild set of parts. Factory, you have the "0" (aka no hole). That 0 refers to the size of the head gasket, piston rings, bearings, etc that is the factory (the "new engine" size).1 and 2 refers to first and 2nd rebuild. Then, as your engine gets wear and tear, and you start loosing compression, you start rebuilding it. One of the components that you rebuild is the cylinder head. Rebuild consists in re-doing the bottom of valves seatings jn the head (if necessary) and making sure the bottom surface are perfectly plane (during the life of the engine it is possible that some slight deformations and imperfections to develop in the cylinder head, in other words is not as plane as it was new). Usually this "fix" is done by a machine shop. Since your cyl head will be a little shorter after the machine shop is done with it, you will need a thicker gasket, hence the 3 different sizes.

This is what I know, and also for cars that don't have sleeves for the cylinder, there are 3 sizes of piston rings, etc.

It's a good question.

I was informed that although most CRD's have no hole HG out of the factory others did have 1 or 2 holes.

I was also informed that it is possible for a an OEM cylinder head with a no hole HG, to be machined to accept the next size up HG...... in this case it would be a one hole gasket.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Post subject:  Re: Head Gasket Thickness Question

So am I to assume that if the HG has 3 holes the head needs to be replaced at the next rebuild? Or are there other indicators if the head can be reused?

I don't currently have any issues but its nice to have the knowledge. :D

Hmmm I was under the impression the different head gasket sizes had to do with the variances of the liner to the deck height.

So you guys think it is a zero hole? Would the hole be in the rusty tab at the bottom of the pic?

Couple pictures of what the cam pins look like when inserted.

Exhaust cam is on the left. You can see the yellow oil fill cap also. Looking down through the oil fill is an easy way to help line up your pins.

We have a few head gaskets and the zero hole you need for $125. The different thicknesses (1.32mm, 1.42mm, 1.52mm) should be to account for varying liner protrusion.

Are those just the head gaskets or with the bolts too? I'm think I'm going to go with the ARP studs as another member did to make sure I don't have any repeat issues with this.

I just want to clarify also. I have a zero whole head gasket because I do have 1 hole on the r/h aft part of the gasket and it measured out to 1.42mm.

Thanks

I don't remember where the tab is located.

To eliminate any mistakes, you will need to ask Jeep Parts, they will need to decipher what HG you have.

That is for the gasket only. Mopar sells gasket for about $250. We also have TTY head bolts if you want a set of those. The holes for gasket size are located on the exposed section of the gasket that tends to be rusted. It looks like there are no holes in that area on your gasket.

OK cool. Yeah definitely no holes in the rusted tab. I took a scotch brite pad to the metal there looking for a part number but no go. I'm going to grab the micrometer again and just take a few different measurements to be absolutely sure. Having that one hole on the bottom right keeps me believing it may be a one hole gasket.

Do you have any one hole gaskets?

Thanks for the help

We have them all.

Well it's done. ARP Studs, new head gasket and timing belt. I've put about 80 miles on it so far with a mix of highway and back roads and have no weird noises, leaks or driveability issues. Jeep runs great. Not an easy job and thank god it is over with.
