I know, this is a jeep forum and not a ford forum but I trust you guys know what you are talking about so I thought I would start here. I have a 1990 Ford truck 4x4 that does not want to go into 4WD-Transfer case shifts fine and I seem to be in 3WD-So, these are the original locking hubs, and I know next to nothing about hubs. Is it a safe assumption that's most likely the hubs? I did jack up the front end, turned the hubs and all seems to work as it should. Anyway, if the consensus is hubs, what hubs should I be looking at?OR, is there a better site that I should ask this questions-I need to start somewhere and you guys seem to know 4 wheeling. Thanks, Ken Portland Oregon |

I would first make sure that the transfer case shaft/drive axle is actually and physically linked to the front diff. I would lift all 4 wheels up and start with the front, rotate left or right wheel. If it freely spins (front diff axle is still and not turning) try re-engaging that hub and see if the front diff shaft is rotating. If still doesn't, then either the transfer case has some issues, either the front diff, either the hub. You can also try rotating the front shaft (that's between transfer case and front diff) with your hand when all 4 wheels are up, and see if front wheels move (if tc is in 4wd, then all 4 wheels should move), or at least if there is anything that goes in the wheel hubs (like an axle) that moves. Do you have a solid axle in the front? You can look to see if the axle from the wheel is moving when 4wd engaged. Hard to advise without too many details, but pretty much you have to identify where you are loosing the "movement", tc, hub or front diff. |

Thanks, Ken Portland Oregon I believe Ford used Warn hubs which you should be able to buy a cheap rebuild kit. Hubs are pretty easy to remove, just unbolt and pull off. May be able to just clean, regrease and put back on. If the hub is toast check the pick n pull for a replacement. |
