Post subject:  Fun story - Rocker arm help

All,

Here is my fun story:

Replaced my timing belt @110k like a good owner on my 2005 CRD Liberty with the help of the info on this forum. The only thing I didn't replace was the tensioner because I forgot to order it, but it seemed to work fine anyhow.

Last month, I took it up to St Cloud MN for a work trip during that really bad cold snap (-19 Deg actual). Yes a really bad idea, but I planned on plugging it in at the hotel. I was at a plant doing a service call, and at about 4 hours, I went to start the jeep up and let it warm up, then grab some dinner. Well after driving 2 blocks, it lost power, blew tons of smoke...and I was pretty sure the timing belt skipped (after only 25k). It was late and I had to get back to the plant to finish. There was no place open to get a rental, so I called the dealer and they set me up with a loaner. I had the jeep towed to the stealership. Long story short, they took 5 days and $650 of my money to tell me what I already knew after taking shroud, fan, valve cover etc. I told them to stop working on it. I rented a trailer and towed it back to Illinois and it sits in my garage. There are several rockers trashed. The rocker roller bearings have a LOT of play (is this normal??). The #1 intake valve is stuck, it appears it is higher than where it belongs. They took the spring off of this one. Also, the tension on all the springs seems to be sloppy and not consistent with each other. I guess I need help with where to get the rockers, springs, head gasket kit and the procedures.. Can someone post where to get these parts that everyone seems to know about? How hard is it to remove/re-install the head?

thanks in advance

LMWatBullRun (I believe) has made a very long convincing post about ARP Head studs, good reading and you should go read that.

Pulling the head isn't that much more involved than doing the Rockers/Lifters honestly. Really you're almost there except for the aforementioned head studs.

Were I you, and I just was except for the valve issues, I would call The VM Specialist in England. Check the clocks (Time difference is significant) and get with them about any parts/rebuilds you need. They have it all and their prices are as good as anyone.

They quoted me $405 for all 16 rockers/lifters shipped to my house in the US, and they have remanufactured heads, valves, springs, etc.

You're going to need some specialty tools if you don't have them already, I hope you know what you're getting into here, it may be easier to just get the rebuilt head and a new gasket with ARP studs.

Best of luck to you, there are many here that have gone through what you are getting ready to delve into and I'm sure they will be willing to help.

That is good to know, but I hope I never have to do it. 8)

Once you have the rockers exposed, it is not that much more work to replace the head, and that would allow you to assess the piston condition as well. As stated, I've done a one by one replacement of the head bolts with ARP studs, and this seems to be working well; if you are planning to pull the head, I would suggest using studs ILO TTY bolts, which do not yield. PM me with questions.
New rockers have no play, so if yours do they are bad and this may have contributed to the timing problem. I replaced mine when I did the studs, and some were very bad, while a few were OK.

there are several sources for parts; GDE has separate head gaskets. Given the rocker wear, I suggest you check the turbo, too. While you are in there I would also consider replacing the glow plugs, and I would plan to check/flush the intercooler, the FC and the intake elbow and manifold.

Well the story dose not sound fun, but it dose sound normal. Yes...the rockers roller's go bad. The EGR eats them up. Mine were bad at 96k.

What is not normal is the intake valve and springs. They are usally good. If that is the case. I would remove the head and take it to a good engine shop. They can measure everything and determine what needs done.
