Post subject:  strange shudder/vibration at speed

Folks, search function not working so I'm just going to go ahead and post my issue.

My CRD's shuddering/vibrating a bit at around 45mph and/or around 2000RPM's. It is a cross between a quick vibration and a shudder, can't hear anything but I can feel it in the steering wheel and in my seat. It's relatively subtle but it's there and it's bothering me. I have a stretch of road on the way to work that I try to set the cruise at 50 on and it is especially annoying at that speed. I'm pretty sure it is engine/transmission related because if I throw the trans into neutral the shuddering stops. It just started after a recent roadtrip I did ~6 hours each way, over a weekend, not sure if this matters.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Tranny in neutral IIRC would stop drive shaft from spinning and it's not uncommon for bad drive shaft U joints to cause odd vibrations. Chat on the forum about those U joints is they really need to be inspected with the drive shaft off the vehicle. Several reports of ones that looked ok until pulled and looked at closely at which point it was found that the bearings were dust.

Sorry to correct, but anytime the vehicle is moving, the drive shaft is turning. This is true of the front drive shaft as well whether it's in 4 wheel drive or not. I would go with U-Joints and it could be the fact the the shaft is loaded when it's in gear where as when in neutral without the load to keep speed, the vibration dissipates some.

Thanks guys I'll check it out again this weekend, not sure if it's getting worse but is pretty bad at 45-50 mph ~2000rpm. If it were a manual trans I would say it felt as if it were about to stall, that kind of shuddering. Mileage doesn't seem to be affected, but I'm only about one tank in to this whole thing...
