Post subject:  it wants to jump out! !!!UPDATE!!

so wife leaves today gets about a mile from home and calls me and says its running really rough. so i run up it to check it out and it has a really really rough idle and the engine acts like it wants to jump out of the jeep and run off. it is also knocking a little louder than normal. so i checked the usual i had an extra fuel filter and changed it, fuel looks good, oil level is fine and no apparent metal in it, and no grinding noises. did a quick search and haven't found any real solutions has anyone had and figured this out?

Guessing your rockers/lifters are trashed.

Would be willing to bet money on it. Over 100k miles? GDE Eco Tune after 80k miles? No ECO Tune at all?

You don't have to be doing anything, it just happens. Timing Belt over due?

Dose not sound good. lets get some info about your jeep?
1. current miles?
2. any mods? Like GDE tune?
3. Timing belt changed?
4. Any other engine work?

79,000 miles no modes what's the easiest way to check the rockers without removing the valve cover ...threw the oil separator

There is NO WAY. You must remove the intake to inspect them.

First I would check do a what i call a suck-blow dollar bill check. This is how.

1. Remove the drivers side boost hose connection at the intake.
2. Start the engine, hold a dollar bill or paper of the same size at the intake.
3. Dose the paper suck in? or suck and blow?
4. Is there any poping noise from the intake?

If the intake blows or pops, the engine jumped time and rocker damage is likely.

Good luck.

yeah i'm not even getting it to start now to check that. i cant imagine the valve train being out of whack the sounds i'm hearing don't add up to that. i'm wondering if it's even getting fuel do you know of a way to check that, can i pull a injector to see if fuel is coming out

There are a few procedures posted here to test the injectors in situ by measuring the amount of returned fuel but as far as I recall they all require the engine to be running.

Dose the jeep have a 2nd generation fuel fliter housing? The original's let air into the fuel system.

If it dose not, start by installing a 2nd gen fuel housing.

I do not think you can pull an injector out and then check that it is providing fuel. Upon trying to start do you smell fuel in the exhaust?

Bad noises while cranking are NOT caused by a fuel head problem. You have a mechanical failure, time to suck it up and start pulling the top off. STOP TRYING TO START IT as the potential of doing other damage is very high until you know what is really wrong.

Does that mean it runs fine at driving speed?

No rough idle all the time think I'm going to have it towed to a dealer to have them diagnose the problem then I'll fix it. Unfortunately I don't know any diesel mechanics so I'll have to trust the dealer. The code reader I have isn't bringing anything up so I have no place to start I do however have the factory workshop books to tackle what ever the throw at me.

This will be a mistake. The dealer knows even less about the CRD motor than you think you know.

Is the fuel head orig?

Is there air in the fuel head when you bleed it?

Have you changed the timing belt?

The dealer diesel mechanic (if there is one at that location) will open the "Daimler-Chrysler academy" book for crd engine and read what's in there, things you can also do without doubt. I stopped even thinking about ever going to a Chrysler dealer unless car is under warranty or is a recall...
