My CRD has been sitting in a 50 degree garage for the past week. Tried to start it today and a click and could hear the accessory fuel pump running. The battery is a year old. Jumping did not solve the problem. Where do I start looking? Does it point to the starter and, if so, how difficult is it to replace?

I sent the original post below from my phone and now see that it may be incoherent. I think I'm getting the classic click from the selinoid engaging but the starter not turning. Checked locally and the best starter/selinoid price is from Autozone for $215. Should I check anything else before I dive into replacing it?

Take the starter out and take it in to be tested, take your battery to be tested as well.

My Grandpa always told me, start with the cheapest stuff first.

I agree with the cheapest first...check your battery cable connections, both at the battery, and where they terminate, especially ground connections.

I received some good advise here. I replaced my original Redtop battery 28 months ago with a new Redtop ($180 from Advanced Auto in Nov 2010). Yesterday when it did not start and only the starter solenoid "clicked", I measured the voltage across the disconnected battery at 11.9V. I thought this was fine, but put the charger on it anyway. After an overnight charge the measured voltage was 12.9V. I reconnected it to the Jeep and it fired up immediately.

My OEM Redtop lasted over 5 years and I replaced it during a cold winter spell to avoid problems. So this replacement Redtop discharged after 28 months to a point where it could not start the Jeep. Will it continue to drain down, and should I be looking for a new battery?

If it wouldn't start after only a week I'd replace the battery

Do a quick load test. Either go to advance auto and have them do it, either fully charge battery, turn on your low beam with engine off, leave it about 10 min, then measure the battery. Should have over 12v, I think should be closer to 12.5. You should also check if alternator charges it properly (with engine running, you should have around 14v on the battery, less than 13.5 and more than 15 is a problem).

But with this picky Diesel engine that wants a very healthy battery, more for ECM purpose, you may still need a new battery... Many people complained about red tops lately. Also, a min 800 cca rated battery is needed for crd.

But glad for you it's only the battery, that's an easy fix.
