Looking at these instructions to potentially replace my torque converter: http://www.greendieselengineering.com/forum/posts/list/37.page Number 9 says: Remove front propshaft (NOTE: use paint pen to mark both shafts when removing so they are re-installed in same orientation this will make sure the balance is maintained), may need to use a punch to pop out CV joint after bolts are loose as it tends to freeze in position. Having the trans in neutral may make disassembly easier. Which piece are they talking about? The long, vertical axle on the driver's side of the transmission? If so, how the hell do I get that thing disconnected? It seems there are a bunch of frozen 8mm bolts on both ends of this thing, but the whole assembly rotates when I try to loosen them. thx |

Try putting the transfer case in 4 Part Time and transmission in park to keep it from spinning. |

Cool thanks. I did the old wedge-screw-drivers-into-the-sloted-brake-rotors-to-keep-the-wheels-from-spinning trick. That gave me the leverage I needed. |

Oi, I've been fighting with this thing most of the day. I stripped one bolt. However, I was able to safely undo the rear end, but it seems I need to get the front side out to lower the transmission:  If the rear is disconnected, should the whole thing pop out of the front transfer case so that I can not worry about the stripped bolt right now? thx |

Per the FSM: (1) With vehicle in neutral, position vehicle on hoist. (2) Mark companion flanges and C/V joints at the front and rear of the propeller shaft for installation reference. (3) Remove bolts (1) (Fig. 9) from the front and rear C/V joints (2). (4) Push propeller shaft forward to clear transfer case companion flange. (5) Remove shaft from the front axle companion flange. (6) Tilt the front of the shaft down and pull shaft forward and remove from the vehicle. After removing the bolts, you slide it forward to come off the flange on the t-case side (might need a dead-blow to knock things loose or penetrating spray and time). After the back is loose, you swing that end around so it has a little room and pull the front end off, then slide the whole assembly down and out. So, to answer the question, yes, it should be okay to not mess with the stripped bold but you might need some elbow grease to get things out. Dan |

On my '05 gasser, I used an 1-1/2" open-end wrench at the back, where it gets bigger, and used the tranny crossmember as the pry point. Pulled pretty hard and it finally popped loose. |

Just tap it side to side and keep trying to compress the shaft and it will eventually let loose. When my first one grenaded itself it took a really big dead blow to get it out. |

I tried this, but the prop shaft seems to be siezed in the transfer case. I'm going to try some liquid wrench or wd40 to loosen it up, but I can't seem to pop it out. Any thoughts? I'm stuck. |

Mine was pretty stuck, too. There's a little bit of lube that seems to create hard suction along with the joint being extended. Get yourself in a good position and pull hard. If needed, whack the end of the werench with a bfh while pulling. That might be enough to break it loose. |

10 minutes with my brand new angle grinder fixed the bolt.  Thanks everyone. Oh and to answer an earlier question. Yes. I have all the tools I need. I have the fsm as a guide, but I've found fsms not directly helpful. I've had to go buy a few things here and there (angle grinder, 12" crescent), but I have a large tool base otherwise. thx |
