Post subject:  Extended Warranty?

I will be picking up my '06 CRD in the next week or two. In light of the problems noted on this site from ball joints, to transmissions, brakes, CCVs and EGRs and the fact that there may not be further CRDs of this model, would it be worth my $$ to get an extended warranty? I've always refused them, as I'd prefer not to put any more money in the dealer's pocket than I have to, but in this case, I'm wondering....

I would, but not from the dealer. Use these people:
http://warrantydirect.com/

This way you can take it to any ASE certified mechanic. So if your dealer doesn't understand diesels, you can find someone who does and still use the warranty. They'll be cheaper than the dealer too.

I would make sure that the warranty you buy will cover the EGR, CCV, ball joints and any other of the problem areas on a Libby. Most of the time when you read the small print the warranty isn't worth the money.

I would buy the Chrysler extended warrenty!!! If you buy max care which is what I have it covers pretty much everything!!! In fact I can't think of anything it doesn't except normal wear items like brakes and the like. It also has rental car coverage!!! Another reason I would buy a Chrysler extended warrenty is that I have seen situations where people that bought other extended warrenties had to pay more than just the deductable, because the warrenty company would NOT pay the total bill!!! So no matter what you decide to do just make sure that it covers you stupid. One more note is that if you don't buy an extended warrenty that has rental car coverage you will be without a car every time it is in the shop even when it is covered under the 3/36 or the 7/70!!! Chrysler doen't provide rental cars, unless you buy an extended warrenty!!! That is why I bought the Chrysler max care extended warrenty!!!

I bought the Max Care on my '05. On this vehicle with it's unknown diesel related issues it will be well worth it. Do some arm twisting, mine came out to @ $1200 for 100k miles, $0 deductible. I figured it this way, it might be the best way to get it sold if this diesel is a flop. You can always cancel it for a rebate later if this Jeep turns out to be more reliable that expected. Diesel parts will be expensive, trash a turbo or an FI pump and you will wish you bought it. This is cheap insurance and sends a strong message to your Jeep service manager to fix it quickly and correctly as they are in this with you for the long haul.

I did the same a RFCRD, I'm totally happy with the extended warranty. Even for normal maintenance on the rig that is expected to exceed one hour they hand me the keys for a new rental, and they see me when they see me, no problems.

For me it also depends on how long you tend to keep the CRD. No matter what I drive, I tend to get a bit itchy for something new after about 4 years.

SO, is it too late to get the extended warranty on my 05 with 15K on it?

Check out the Jeep/Chrysler website. I believe you have 48,000 miles or 48 months to sign up for an extended warranty. The advantage of getting it with a new car is the $1,000+ can be added to your total cost and become part of your monthly payments.
