Post subject:  Installing Magnaflow Muffler
I'm trying to save some money for the GDE Eco-Tune but I want to get rid of the stock muffler now. So I'm not gonna spend the money for a complete exhaust kit. Was wonder what others may have installed or what would you install just doing a muffle swap. I want to go with MagnaFlow and trying to decide on model # 12226 / 12256 / or 12286.

I used this one. It's a Magnaflow knock-off with the flow-through design. A local shop charged me $40 to weld it in. It's a little bit louder. I can barely notice it in the cab. Love it.

I'm not sure I'd spend the money personally. Given the actual (I've measured it) size of the outflow from the turbo and the ID of the exhaust pipe thru the bend under the frame I'm not sure a larger diameter pipe on the muffler makes much of a difference but what the heck it's not much money. stoutdog is running a MagnaFlow 12226 and said his 06 coasted a bit better than with the stock muffler but that was pre GDE tune. I've driven his vehicle for ca. 2000 miles and don't notice any difference in sound, coasting, etc when compared to mine keeping in mind that I now have the Stage II turbo and associated GDE tune but then I don't stomp the go pedal all that often.

12226 on mine, happy with the improvement in performance.
Already had GDE Eco Tune when it went on.
$60 labor to install at local muffler shop

Already got a quote of 40.00 to install it. the 12226 seems popular and the 12256 is longer over all but not by much about 4in.
the 12286 body length is 24in and the 12586 is 22in. I probably should measure the muffler on it now for comparable body size.

I won't comment pro or con on straight pipes but I will note that if you elect to go this route or the cat remove route that you would be wise to keep what you take out. Just because you are not currently subject to emissions inspections doesn't mean they won't come to you, you will move to them, or you will sell to someone that is covered. If any of those events happen at least some if not all emissions inspections will look under the car to see if a muffler or cat at least "appear" to be in place and if not you fail.

I completely agree with Papaindigo.

I am ALSO under the impression that the TURBO is the muffler (by legal deffiniton) on our Jeeps, but of course arguing it would be a bigger pain than having a cheap free flowing one installed.

Unless your muffler is rusted out, save your money and buy that GDE tune ASAP!
Earlier threads on this subject have suggested that a less restrictive cat back system won't be of much good anyhow unless the necked down cat outlet is enlarged to 2 1/2".
The stock muffler may be a boat anchor, but you will be hard pressed to find a after market/speed shop muffler that will last 8 plus years, like the stock one will.
If you strait pipe it, you may turn off any future buyers, if you need to sell it.
And depending where you live, it won't pass inspection.

What are the fuel economy gains with a new muffler or straight pipe?

I have the GDE Eco tune. Definitely willing to straight-pipe it if I'll pick up a few more MPGs.

BTW...There are some clips on Youtube with the straight pipes. Search "Liberty CRD straight pipe" or "Liberty CRD muffler delete". I wasn't crazy about the sound on a daily driver. That's why I went with the flow-thru muffler. Minimal restriction, a little louder.

If you remove the restriction behind the cat and straight pipe or straight through muffler you will see a little less turbo lag, and little more diesel sound, and a little more MPG, but IMHO those "littles" are really little... For me the straight pipe (my CAT is still there) was the best bang for the buck. less than half the cost of a muffler for the same performance.

Keep your cat whatever you do.

Hopefully I'll have luck digging up this old thread. Anyone know an approximate cost on strait piping from behind the cat? So, the muffler shop needs to cut the restriction by getting within how many inches of the cat? And will this reduce torque any, or just increase because of increased velocity?

A shop that would not rip you off, shouldn't charge more than 50-ish bucks as you only need a straight small pipe to replace the muffler, so weld on one side and clamp on cat side. I haven't noticed anything but a nice growl when you hammer it.
