What is the way to fix trans dipstick from coming out of tube by itself? Will not stay seated in tube.

I recall some saying they crimped the tube or dipstick flange that goes over the tube but I'm not sure how. I just grabbed a spare piece of double sided velcro; wrapped one end around a worm clamp; attached the worm clamp to the dip stick tube; and warped other end thru dip stick loop. Problem solved, net cost maybe $1.00

Or wrap a bit of duct tape around it to hold it in the tube.

I sqeezed the tube egg shaped with channel locks for more resistance.

Consider cutting 3/8 inch off the bottom of it and/or drilling a small hole in the tube to vent excesss pressure that may not be getting out the tranny vent.

***EDITED OUT***

I originally said to remove the Transmission dipstick and put a 20 degree bend in it, to keep it from coming out.

THIS IS A TERRIBLE IDEA!!!!!

If your transmission dipstick is coming out of the tube, YOU HAVE OTHER PROBLEMS! Change your fluid and check your filters, because this extra pressure will cause your Solenoid pack in your transmission to fail!

DANGER WILL ROBINSON, DANGER DANGER!!!!

This ends our public service announcement.

The dipstick is popping out because your transmission vent is plugged. Fix the actual problem, and this will stop. Crimping the tube is a bad idea! You can access the vent from the driver's side of the transmission, up on the top side of the tranny is a piece of rubber hose a few inches long with a plastic vent on the end. This vent is most likely plugged up with dirt. You can clean the vent and just put it back on. OR, If you want to make this a forever fix, use about 4ft of hose, and bring the vent up to the firewall. I have my trans vent and transfer case vents attached to the firewall, up near the fuel filter. Now they are visible to inspect, and up high in a much cleaner area.

I had the same problem you're describing. This has fixed it for good...

This appears to be a design feature when you put the dipstick in - you can feel it hit the bottom - before it fully seats on the tube.

- happens on the Euro version too -they had the early recommendation of rotate 180 degrees and or make a slight bend.

one of the folks over in the general section makes an extension to the dipstick tube, several folks have done the crimp.

the normal tranny vent is on top of the transmission - and many of those affect have never seen dirt so it might affect some

- but no indication that the primary cause - probably a good thing to eliminate first - there's a thread somewhere on

extending the vents

At least one member here posted that the inside of his tranny pan was scratched where the dipstick 'hits bottom.' I go along with it just being too long.

That was me. The dipsticks in our trannys are too long, but I wouldn't rule out a clogged vent if mine was popping out more than it used to.

Mine has done this since new whilst the engine sound proofing cover could rub it.
First of all the engine sound-proofing cover was lifting it - there is actually a small oblique rub mark on it.
I agree they are too long - next time the pan is off I am blueing the tip and trimming it as well as using it to support poly lines for breathers to a manifold.
In the interim, I've used a flaring tool to slightly flare the top of the tube - this is easy to do without introducing extraneous material.
I plan on notching the cover to clear the dipstick.
I know I don't have the cold to deal with as that cover has a role in insulating against noise AND heat but for now I have the engine sound-proofing cover removed to allow some "redecorating" or rather re-organising to create space and it hasn't come out since flaring.

I'm going with the too long reasoning.
As an experiment, I set mine about 1/2 inch out of the tube.
Then after 2-3 days of driving it moved out another 2-3 inches.
So it seems to me its not pressure pushing it out, its too long and vibration is pushing it out.

Maybe I need new motor mounts?

There is a certain position (rotation-ally) that keeps mine seated. IF I put it in wrong it will pop out. For mine, it's a matter of finding the right way to insert it.

It was meant to be. I am having this problem, and I remembered there was an issue discussed OTHER than just the dipstick being too long. (So many dirty jokes to be had in this thread) I will be checking my vent plug immediately as I've been all over muddy roads with thick clay and muck. I had this problem years ago, but it's been fine for quite some time now. I know that I have ONE way to put the dipstick in that allows it to stay, but now it comes out regardless. Could a clogged vent be causing any sluggish performance in the trans? I have been feeling a little slippage when I'm almost stopped and then the light turns green and I go again. From a dead stop, I feel like there is almost a 2 second lag before the Jeep takes off and spins the tires unintentionally. I'm not trying to hijack the thread, but are these sluggish symptoms in any way related to a popping dipstick?

I have the same problem but I just had mine rebuilt. I never had this problem before the rebuild. :banghead:

2 second lag from a dead stop?
Sounds like normal turbo lag to me.
Or could be low transmission fluid.

While at a dead stop, turn O/D off, pull the shifter down to 1st, and try shifting it manually.
Keep an eye on the tach and keep your shift points below 2500rpm.
(2nd gear comes really quick, about 5-10mph, 3rd comes in at about 20mph)
If you are not getting firm noticeable shifts then you might have a problem.

This transmission seems pretty lackadaisical at times.
When I'm rolling along between 15-20mph and accelerate, the transmission wont always down
shift from 3rd to 2nd. Makes it feel sluggish.
If I manually downshift to 2nd at that point, then it feels great.
