Just lost the transmission...

While getting over the sticker shock of having a remanufactured unit installed, are there any upgrades I should consider at this time...
BTW, $4200 installed :furious:

How exactly is it "LOST" (ha!)? I'd be curious if you actually need it to be replaced or if you're not just in need of replacing a few items that have died on a LOT of people. The 545RFE is pretty darned strong...

You can drop the transmission in your driveway with a few jacks and stands and a few good friends. But I am with Dan I doubt you hurt your transmission unless you ran it out of fluid. I would take it to a shop specializing in transmission and stay away from the dealerships. I know people who have had them rebuilt for 2000.

just a quick 20 sec search. You can find a shop to remove and replace a tranny for $400-600 easily. Spend another $100 on fluid and the shipping back and forth and not super careful you can easily get this done for less than $2500 and that's with you not doing any work yourself. Do it yourself and you'll be under 2K easily

I second all these. I do not know where your located, (if you were in the WI IL I-90 area i could point you in a good direction) but I know for sure 4200 is a rip off. All you will need is to have it rebuilt, and depending on what is actually wrong with it those parts replaced. May be the pump, may be clutches etc,etc. A good tranny shop (not the stealership) will get you moving in the right direction and can have it done fairly quick, as these are not hard parts to come by.

Thanks for the responses. I did contact a couple transmission shops and found one that will do it for 16 hours (max) of labor plus parts. Probably looking at about $2500-ish but I'll know more tomorrow when they get it on the table and apart. Will also look into a heavy duty TC as well.
Like my dad, I'm willing to go head first into the engine but there's just something about a transmission I just try to avoid, aside from a clutch job.

Hopefully this will go well and I'll be out to the local BLM land soon. Thankfully, I was only about 1 mile off the highway here in New Mexico when it happened and just enough cell coverage to get to AAA. I was planning on going in about 15 miles and that would have been quite the walk to get cell service.

The tranny job isn't difficult to do. Its a little time consuming for first timer but well worth doing itself to save you money.

The most difficult part for me was removing the starter (stuck bolt) and dealing with my bad back. I was able to drop tranny from vehicle but couldn't man handle replacement tranny/xfer case onto the tranny jack for reinstallation-thanks SS for helping me out.

I'll gladly give tips and walk you thru it via email and phone if needed to help you. I hate seeing money spent on labor at a shop.

you can get a tranny jack at harbor freight using one of their 20% coupons from many magazines for $62 after the coupon, well worth it to do the job

you'll save a few hundred..so the $62 shouldn't hurt too much

Too bad you didn't look last week at HF - the tranny jack was on sale (plus the coupon). Cost me a little over $50 so I could drop the tranny on my '05 gasser.

Dropping the tranny was quite easy (just time-consuming) and is most of the labor quoted for the job - drop it yourself and bring it to them for the rebuild.
