I'm guessing that my torque converter has failed. I was driving on the interstate and when I got off it threw some codes and then the trans overheat light came on (this happened about a month ago, so I'm working from my frail memory here). It went into "limp mode" and wouldn't shift out of 3rd gear. Luckily I was only about a mile from home so I just drove 35 mph and parked it. I don't remember the code numbers now but one was something like "lost communication with TCU", one was something like "ECU not communicating with TCU" and then there was "low turbo boost" and something about the intercooler. Sorry I can't be more specific. I cleared the codes to see if I could get them to throw again the next day after things cooled off. No codes have reappeared. I drove it around the neighborhood with the windows down and I am now hearing clunking and clapping sounds coming from the general area of the trans. It stalled when I come to a stop and is slips a little when moving from a dead stop. I'm guessing that this is the TC. I would like to hear opinions if I'm on the right track or not. I have no problem putting in a Suncoast TC and TransGo kit but I don't want to do it unless it's needed. Comments? Thanks! |

Bump... Anyone got some feedback? I get home from my business trip in a few days and I guess I'll drop the trans and see what I can see. |

1. Have you checked the transmission fluid? (I believe), that it should be refilled with only ATF4. 2. Have you ever had the transmission fluid and/or filter replaced? If so how many times? 3. Is it the original T/C? 4. How many miles on your T/C? 5. DTC(S)? Accurate DTC'S along with the description of the problem, help to accurately diagnose the failure. It could be your T/C, but I think other things should be ruled out first. Also, slipping, clunking, and clapping noises from the transmission, I suspect that you are right about the T/C failure and it is not a good sign. Hope you can figure it out, and wish you the best. Thanks for the reply Tony! I wish I would have recorded the DTC's but I cleared them thinking that they would reappear. Lesson learned on that one! I am on the original TC. I bought the vehicle with 21k miles on it and I am at 88k and change now. Fluid and filter were replaced at 50k. I have not checked fluid level since the trouble started. It was fine when I checked it about 2 weeks prior (not that that makes much difference). I think I'm going to replace the TC anyway since I'm dropping the trans. I'll probably go with the Suncoast since I plan on getting a GDE tune soon as well. I don't know if I need the Trango kit or not. I have read arguments on both sides. |

New Mopar TC may now be under $300. Check recent thread. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=73830&start=40 DOC |

Thanks for Doc. I had read that thread a while ago but forgotten about it. I'm not hell bent on the Suncoast, but I do only want to do this once. From searching and reading the related threads, it looks like folks are convinced that that "euro" TC will hold up to a hot tune even. I'm not sure if I'll go that route or not yet. I think the full torque Ecotune is about all I will need. The jury is still out on that decision. ![]() Thanks again. |

IIRC, you can check with Keith at GDE, the Euro TC will hold up even with GDE's stage II turbo and its tune. |

When my TC failed I have severe drive train vibration, no codes, no lights. If its a TC failiure, i feel its displaying atypical symptoms. |
