Hi All,
I've been the proud owner of a 2003 2.8CRD Limited Cherokee (UK) since 2007. Most of this time has been trouble free but recently I'm having a really annoying problem.
She starts fine every morning but 10mins later cuts out dead, wait 5mins (or longer) start up again and it's good to go no more problems until I start from cold again.
This happens at idle or driving, sometimes if the revs are high enough it just splutters a couple of times then drives fine.

So far the fuel filter has been replaced and the fuel system checked for leaks, no problems. The local specialist hooked her up to the OBD scanner and found a P0340 CMP Position Sensor Circuit CMP/CKP Sync. Failure
The sensor was replaced with a known working unit but 10 mins down the street and it stops again. I got her started after about 10mins and 6 attempts. Straight back on the scanner and code had popped up again but as it's running all the sensor readings are fine.

I'm stumped, any help, suggestions or inspiration would be great.

Carl

Sure sounds like air in fuel issues to me. When you say no fuel leaks? Fuel is not leaking out, Air is leaking in! You wont see anything most likely. Check all your hose clamps to be sure they are not cutting into the hoses. In the UK do they have problems with fuel heads we have here in the US?

If air was getting in I would expect it to cut out when accelerating. It only happens once then runs fine until the next time I start from cold.
I don't know if it's coincidence but it always happens as the temp guage hits the first mark?

Not sure about the fuel head, the primer is white and screwed into the top, it's not the same as the unit in the bleeding guide.

Yeah the early Export models have an early form of Racor filter head...looks different to the original USA fuel head and the Racor fuel head that the US guys fit on their CRDs....priming it is similar though. I would still suspect air in the fuel being you problem or a bad crankshaft or camshaft sensor.

Download the 2.5_2.8 Export Diesel supplement here...courtesy of Sir Sam....it covers the early Export CRD engines. You can also download the Service Manual for your year KJ which covers the rest of the Jeep other than the engine and includes circuit diagrams. :)

Bleed the fuel head the next time the motor dies and see if air or fuel comes out on the first strokes of the primer. You might try parking overnight on a hill with the motor pointed downhill and notice whether it takes longer to die the next morning than when you park on the flat.

Thanks for the suggestions, ended up being the crank sensor.

I was lucky enough to have a local specialist with used parts to try, a dealer would have screwed me!
