Pulling engine on 2006 CRD.

Ok long story short, I have a 2006 Liberty CRD, owned it since new and last fall it developed a coolant leak which I was told by the dealer it appears to be a cracked block. It has 158,000 kms (98176 miles) which is not very many for a diesel engine, Dealer says it looks like a factory defect in the block casting, but Chrysler will not do anything about it so I am on my own! Anyway I am pulling the engine and noticed that there is only one lifting lug on the front of the engine, is that all that is needed or is there a special adapter to attach somewhere on these engines? No personal experience - but does it show lifting points in the factory Service Manual? They're available in PDF form online...

Got the engine out today and yes The block is cracked and not just a little bit. It has a crack that goes right along the top of the machined surface for the flex plate from the left side all the way to the right side, in total probably about a 6 inch crack, definately appears to be a factory casting defect as there is no reason why it should crack there from stress or mechanical reasons. Now I need to decide if I should get a new engine or what to do. Like I posted it has fairly low mileage and it is a Limited model loaded up with leather and the works, paid 48,000 new for it and the rest of the unit is in good condition.

I know it's probably not going to do you any good, but have you priced a new short block from the dealer? I am curious if they can/ will get one and the price on it they offer it.

I can sell you a bare block with about 80k on it with a damaged sleeve which I know you can get and have pressed out. Then it is just a matter of swapping everything over and even replace a few things along the way. PM if interested and I can ship it if you would like.

You can braze a crack like that; the question is what OTHER latent defects does it have?

I would look around for a useable core and rebuild it.

USEABLE CORE JUST NEEDS A SLEEVE

Still havent repaired it yet but Iam now wanting to give it another try, still having a hard time finding a used engine or block. I went to 3 dealers a couple weeks ago and inquired about the cost of putting in a new engine, they said that it would be a new short block and with installation, taxes and core it would come to around $18000, Also they said that I cannot get a core exchange because it is a cracked engine block and Chrysler wont take it back. Chrysler have pissed in my cornflakes on this vehicle and I have lost all respect for that company, Whats worse is when it was first diagnosed by a dealer it was only 10,000km's over and just under 6 months off warranty and Chrysler would not do anything for me, not even suck up the labour for a replacement.

Have you looked into a stitching repair of the existing block? I know of one 5.9 and one 6.5 that used the technique successfully.

That looks like it's for the US version. There is an export version I have seen listed for $3500 for a remanufactured long block. I would look into it.

I would also inquire with V.M. Motori's U.S. office. You could very well get a sympathetic ear from them and help if you decide to take Chrysler to small claims court. At the very least you should get an idea from them if you have a valid case for small claims action.

Don't waste your time or your money on small claims or big claims court. Remember the bankruptcy? The judge in NY made it very clear how he was screwing everyone and giving a gift to Fiat:

Perhaps you are right, but it may be worth the time and effort to find out. Consumer protection laws are different here in Canada than they are in the U.S., and dntlkbak is from Saskatchewan. What that judge in New York ruled on probably does not apply up here in the Great White North.

Possibly, but both owners were international companies. At the same time, any business will do what is in their own best interest - in this case, (and most) whatever costs them the least in cash.

Witness the cold calculations that GM made about the explosive saddlebag gas tanks on their larger trucks. They figured out that it would be cheaper to pay the death and injury claims versus redesigning the truck the right way.

Same with Ford and the Pinto's gas tank. Ford had even DESIGNED AND TESTED a bladder-liner for the tank that WOULD NOT LEAK in the very type of accidents that doomed the design, and they had also designed it to come with AIRBAGS! That could have been the industry's shining star of safety... But it would have cost more money.

Cynical? Maybe. Cold? Certainly. Reality? Every bit of it.
