Leaking injectors. Mech says 1000.00 ea??? Any thoughts?

My brother just bought a 2005 CRD Limited from a dealership. He got home and smelled fuel. He took off the engine cover and turned it on and noticed two injectors leaking. His mechanic says worst case the injectors are 1000.00 each!!!! Ive had no issues with my CRD at all. Ive been lucky. Anyone with knowledge? He is talking with the dealership about covering this... Wish him luck..

A few days ago I was looking online there is a shop in Eugene Or with reman injectors for about 300 each. Look into that and I will try to get more info on that too.

After core charge refund IDparts has remans for $429 or if you have a local or reasonably local Bosch shop they can do the work. However, the most common reason for fuel leak around the injectors is the copper crush washer and "O" ring need replacing for like $10 in parts plus labor or it could be where the fuel line clips in.

If not, search for an authorized Bosch diesel service shop in his area.

For me, the term "leaking" can take many paths. Yes, it may be an O-Ring or the copper crush washer. It may also be a cracked injector body. The CRD fuel injection systems are HIGH PRESSURE, as in 20,000 PSI. If any fluid hits your body at that pressure, it can literally go through you and quite possibly kill you! Please be careful.

$1000.00 for an injector is rather expensive. Hope this helps.

We have new injectors for $400 if your brother ends up needing some. Hopefully the problem is just a bad seal.

I will sell you a set of used ones with less then 80k on them for 400. But i am with everyone else hopefully just the copper crush washers.

If it was leaking through the copper crush washers you would have heard it spitting. I very recently repaired a problem just like this in my #1 injector. Apparently when I put my injectors back on, the copper crush washer on #1 got something under it, and when the washer finally sealed in (approx 3k miles) it blew out a small section of the $2 copper crush washer and then went on to burn up the gasket and was spitting through the top of the injector.

The fix took me about $4 and 30 minutes with a torque wrench and a 17mm crow's foot socket for the fuel rail. I used a 20 gauge bore brush for a shotgun to clean the injector recess from all the unburned fuel residue and everything works great now. I found a small burned through spot in the crush washer, and I can't entirely be sure it wasn't just defective when I put it on since it's such a cheap part, but I'm going to chalk this one up to lesson learned.

Run the engine (it will be fine to idle it) and hold a piece of paper or some cardboard around the injectors. If the paper doesn't get wet from an invisible source, then you don't have a high pressure leak. That would be a good thing. If the fuel is spitting up from the bottom, that is crush washer territory. The o-ring is ONLY a dust seal and keep-the-injector-vertical part. It is not integral to the operation of the injector. You can also replace it using a plumbing o-ring from Home Depot.

The crush washers are cheap (as has been said) and if you don't get it out when removing the injector, the narrow copper brush from a Wal-Mart shotgun cleaning kit is the perfect size to fit through it and pull it right out of that deep hole. As a side benefit, the copper brushes are soft enough that they won't hurt the injector bore while cleaning off any old crud in there.

The soft fuzzy brushes work great to clean the bores out too, especially when drowned in brake cleaner first. The cleaner will evaporate harmlessly long before you can restart the engine. Any crud that gets down the hole into the cylinder will land in the 'bowl' in the top of the cylinder - don't worry about it. Just don't drop anything metal in there.

it could also be around the fuel inlet collar of the injector.
I had the same deal.
After replacing two sets of copper washers, I looked at the dang thing and sure enough, fuel was coming from around the collar. Glad I didn't spend the money on new injectors!

I had to apply some significant torque to my injector line caps to get them leak free. I have a set of brake line wrenches and they came in very handy for this job.
