Post subject:  Fuel Bleed Screw won't close

THis morning I made a trip, and when I started the jeep to come back, had to bleed the fuel system at the filter housing. It's been getting more common lately. I keep the right wrench with me...

Anyway, I got home, it sat for a while and lost all prime when I went to start it. I went to bleed it again, and discovered the bleed screw does not stop flowing. It feels like it's seated. I don't want to put more torque against it because it feels like that's about all the threads should take.

When I pump the prime now,it comes right thru the bleed screw. I took the screw out and cleaned it and inspected it. No galling on the screw - but I don't know what shape the end of the screw should be. I know its a bevelled screw, but is the end supposed to be rounded a bit or flat.

Any suggestions - do I need to clean the housing out? How? Do I need a new screw?

I searched all over and haven't seen anyone else with a bleeder that won't close...

As I recall it's essentially identical to a brake cylinder bleeding screw; beveled to a point with a hole in the side. Bevel mates to a reversed bevel in the fuel filter head. I suspect that head is aluminum or some soft metal and the reverse bevel can be damaged in which case the bleeder screw won't seal. 2 things you can try:
1. go to a real parts store and see if you can match the bleeder screw
2. Lubrication Specialist used to stock a CRD bleeder valve kit that looks pretty much like the one at this link http://www.lubricationspecialist.com/gm ... valve-kit/ even though the image is not the best you get the idea. It consists of an adapter that threads into the bleeder valve hole; a "T" handled valve with a compression fitting with a sleeve off one side that fits a piece of poly tubing. I suspect you can get the adapter at like NAPA and the valve either there or at a plumbing supply as it looks to be about the same as a freezer ice maker supply line valve.

Also for what it's worth if you have the 1st generation fuel filter head your best bet is to junk that head and get the 2n gen filter head and wiring pigtail. Often solves air in fuel problems and the fuel heater element won't leak and possible start a fire.

I'm not sure if this will be of any help to you, but I did run across this youtube yesterday explaining on how to bleed the fuel head. It takes him 30 seconds or so to get a good focus on the camera, but it does show a pretty good close up of the bleeder screw.

I am mechanically illiterate, and just now regretfully becoming familiar with my crd's engine. If this is of no use to you, I will gladly blame my own ignorance.
