If you have to rebuild the 4 cylinder CRD engine and consider it to be daunting,
take a look at this project of a French masochist working on a VW V-10 diesel:

Serious glutton for punishment. Says it took him 8 months, taking it easy, to rebuild the motor.

Yikes

That was on my list of must owns when the price drops out some more. But maybe I will just drool at them when I see them instead.

Me too, Audiboy, me too. After reading that - I think I'm no longer dreaming about one of those either.

Looking at those pictures... OUCH. The timing on those is maintained by a set of GEARS, no timing belt at all. That image toward the beginning where the gear was laying broken at the bottom of that chamber at the top... WTF kind of forces happened to cause that??? Holy crap on a cracker, that job looks enormous.

Why oh why won't VW bring the inline 5 TDI engine to America? They took the I-5 and glued two of them together to come up with the V10. Obviously it is a massively complex engine. We know from our own CRD engines and their capability that towing big vehicles around is possible with just 4 cylinders, 5 would be plenty. 10 is just insane.

That set of gears actually powers everything in a V10 Tdi engine. Alternator, ac compressor and power steering pump are also powered by that gearset module. There are no belts at all. If I remember correctly the alternator turns 3.6 times faster than the crankshaft.

I have pulled 3500 kg trailer with one of those and you can hardly notice you tow something, engine has so much power and torque. It is a great car. Downside is you have to drop the engine to get some parts replaced (for example one of the turbos).

Thank you wobbly always love a reason to pick on the duracrap boys. And you are not helping me not want a V10 TDI touareg. My mother actually bought a new TDI touareg and with its twin turbo V-6 it is a road rocket and a torque monster.

The v10 Touareg got the worst full mileage of any diesel SUV or truck on the road (~15), Hope the V6 does better.

I stand by what I say, look at the forums, the V10 Touareg get about 15mpg in city, low 20's on highway. I have yet to see any V6 Touareg mpg stated near your numbers. I would sharpen your pencil.

I have seen a hand calculated 26 around town with my mother driving of course. She takes it easy I am the only one who has had it on the highway and I averaged hand calculated around 31 but I average in the 80s for most of the time. So yes the 42 might be a little unrealistic but I bet I could add at least about 3 to 4 mpg if I could keep it below 75mph.
