My ABS/Odometer is disabled. Codes say something like Left rear wheel sensor fail Right rear wheel sensor fail. A mechanic told me that it is the one sensor in the rear near the rear diff.

I'm going to try replacing the rear sensor and driving it. Then I will consider the wiring if that does not work.

Does anyone have a pic of this sensor? I'm a bit of a mechanic moron when it comes to finding stuff, but I can usually fix it if I know what it is.

Well known KJ, not specifically CRD, problem and likely applies to a host of other vehicles. The 05 has sensors on both front wheels and a single rear one, chat says it's on top of the differential but I don't have a picture, and the 06 has sensors on all 4 wheels. Could be:
1. bad sensor - don't offhand know how to test the sensor but they only cost like $20 per;
2. broken sensor wire commonly inside the insulation (05 seems to be prone to this on rear sensor) - I presume this can be tested with a standard continuity meter if you can figure out where the connector is and the appropriate pinouts to test.
3. bad "hub" - not quite sure what this means but have seen mention

Wish I could help more. Hopefully a member who has actually dealt with this issue can do a post with pics for the CRD Tech section.

I replaced the sensor and drove around for a few miles. It did not fix the problem.

I don't think I noticed any frayed wiring under the insulation, but I have to inspect a bit harder. If I don't find any frayed wiring, how in the world do I find out where the issue is?

Check for continuity between pins on the connector, likely under back seat, and the sensor. For details look at wiring diagram or wait until someone that knows the details weighs in.

Do you have a brake light on (the dash)? and you have no ODO, but speedo? Your's is an 05 right?

So likely your problem is an error in signal from rear diff. Since you replaced the sensor it is likely broken wiring which happens especially if you are lifted. You could track it down with a multimeter or rf signal tracer or just buy a new plug/harness and splice it in.

There is a small chance it could be from a dirty tone ring but that should give a separate error code. Who read your codes?

A mechanic with a ABS code reader. Whatever it was, it looked awful expensive compared to the code readers I'm used to.

The symptoms you have are EXACTLY what occurs when a signal is not received from the single rear sensor on an '05. If you are sure the sensor is good, it is the wiring.

Unless you have the code cleared it does take a bit for the computer to see the signal is good after it's fixed and then clear itself. Mabe 5 miles...

Oh really? I doubt I drove 5 miles. Probably more like 1 mile. I guess we will see when I make the drive to work!

This is what happened to me and here is how I fixed it in my 2005 CRD.

It was a broken wire on the rear abs sensor that could not be seen because it was hidden by the plastic sheathing.

Those wires are so thin that continuous vehicle shaking will snap it.

The new OEM replacement wire is much thicker, minimizing the snap effect and it comes with a new plug.

When replacing it, make sure that the wires aren't crossed, before snipping the wires back 15" note how they relate to the plug and replace the new wires in the same way to minimize crossed wires.

Test first before soldering the wires. You will need to roll the rear wheels forward 10 to 15 feet before the abs light on the dash goes out. If it doesn't go out, your wires are crossed..... swap wires and try again till the light goes off.

What causes the ABS light to come on and off is the on and off contact of the broken wires when the vehicle is running / shaking.

I am betting on the wires being the cause, but I will have to see when I make the commute to work if it is fixed.

Do you have a link for the replacement wire? I can't find what I'm looking for. I'm not entirely sure how to do this, but it shouldn't be hard to figure it out by myself.

Mine required a lot more than 10-15 feet for the light to go off, it actually worried me that I wasted money at first, but that could have been a anomaly

My experience is that the odo starts working right away. Lights should go out within a mile, though.

Didn't work. I was busy today so I didn't get to fool with it, but I looked under the insulation and it appears someone might have spliced it in the past. I'm not sure, but there is a wrapping of electric tape near the connector/hub or whatever you call it. I didn't have time to investigate today.

I need some advice on the wiring guys.

If I find a place where the wiring is damaged I will just try and splice it.

If I don't find any damage though, I have no idea what meters you guys are talking about.

Been there done that....Buy a new wiring harness and plug from the dealer and call it a day.
