I am a proud owner of a new crd for about a week now. This is a great forum, I have learned a lot. It is an '05 with about 80k miles. Just wondering if anyone put a metal plate or something in there to block the egr, and how did it work and exactly where did you put it . I don't have the money for a tune kit right now. I will be spending the money on a tb kit first. thanks. also, does anyone know of a good garage in north MS. I live about 50 miles south of Memphis.

Did you check the trusted mechanics thread and if you have not already done so read Sam's NOOB guide.

On your EGR the best long term fix is a GDE tune. In the short term rather than blocking the EGR try either or both 1) EHM mode which diverts the CCV oil from the air stream or 2) simply unplug the MAF sensor which will throw a CEL but does turn the EGR off. If you do the latter and have to deal with inspections get it done before unplugging and replug a few days before the next inspection to clear the code. Much less hassle than a blocking plate.

Get a SEGR, electronically deletes your EGR without lighting the CEL.

At 50 miles south of Memphis and per MM53's mechanic query I assume he is in northern Mississippi and exempt from emissions testing but subject to a "safety" inspection for $5 which I assume has already been done and is good for 1 year. If so it seems to me while saving money for a GDE tune there are 2 basically free approaches to deleting EGR function while he saves $s for the tune. Certainly the SEGR shuts down the EGR with no CEL, which is good, but intalling the SEGR requires either building from a kit or purchasing a prebuilt unit and then either way wiring it in. As I recall a prebuilt kit costs a significant portion of what a GDE tunes costs don't recall the kit cost.

Hence my suggestion to unplug the MAF and ignore the CEL with the implication of get a GDE tune before the next safety inspection.

+1 on the GDE tune, I hated the CEL when I had the MAF unplugged! The GDE worth the money and you are supporting a small business that for some crazy reason is still awesome enough to continue supporting our small community of CRD's!

It would be nice to cap off the EGR and the tube off the manifold but likely not worth the effort. I remember reading about someone did end up doing it but I cannot remember who.

Oh and this guy (papaindigo) is full of good info! This forum is great for people like me who work 10+ hrs a day and don't have a ton of extra time to troubleshoot! Thanks LOST!

SEGR disables the OEM turbo overspeed protection. However, GDE tunes retain it. I have SEGR, but have had it disabled since GDE tunes became available.

We now know that rockers rarely last over 100K without EGR being disabled. ORM does NOT do this nearly enough.

Just a small nitpick: It's not overspeed protection, but surge protection from lifting off the go pedal suddenly at high boost.

I plated off the EGR in my wife's CRD. I took off the metal tube that goes from the aluminum intake elbow down and back to the EGR valve. A small disc cut out of the bottom of a beer can has the perfect dish and thickness to lay in the trumpet end of this tube where it seals to the elbow and be sealed tight with a little RTV. Reinstalling the tube squeezes it in place and it is invisible. This will cause a CEL without the right ECU tune or a SEGR.
