Post subject:  No glow plug light (or super fast) & spontaneous power drop

Anyone out there with a 2005 or 2006 CRD Liberty that has experienced super fast or no glow plug light at all?

And, just today my wife said she also experienced an immediate slow-down to 20 mph. Pulled over. Shut down. Restart. Then all was fine.

So far, no "check engine" light illuminated.

I know, two potentially different issues. Could be glow plug relay? Bad fuel filter?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated before we go in to the dealer for a raping.

Steve

I was pretty sure that all of the CRD's have a fast glow plug light.

You say there was power loss and when it was turned off it went back to normal...did you check the fuel filter for air? Unless you have a lift pump, a loss of power where it struggles to get to 30mph AND it goes back to normal after a restart sounds like air in the fuel filter to me.

I would use the prime pump and then bleed the 7/16 (I think) bolt of air until you get a clean stream.

At ambient temperatures above 60 F, the glow plugs are set to not come on at all, so the fractional second the light comes on is quite normal. They all truly do, in fact, do that.

As for the loss of power your wife experienced, the most common cause of that is marginally clogging fuel filter. This even more than air in the filter, which usually causes startup issues more than power loss. And yes, clogging filter will set limp mode that requires shut down and restart to return to normal. If this is your issue, expect it to get worse.

So, when was the last time you replaced the fuel filter?

Thx folks. I suspect the filter as well. Will start with that.

I appreciate the thoughts and will report back.

Look at owner's manual for position of glow plug light; switch ignition on; light should appear for a fraction of a second or a tad more. X2 on air in fuel; if you have 1s gen fuel filter head suggest you get 2n gen (see Sam's NOOB guide for difference)

Well fuel filter it was.....

...plus a little discovery.

Heater plug was burnt out due to fuel leaking INTO the plug itself from the head. I'll post a pic shortly. I noticed it when I was pumping to purge air. Fuel began to run out of the plug socket. This is what I said: "Seriously?!?!"

I guess I'll be getting the upgraded head.

Thanks again you guys.

Glad you found the problem before the short caused a fire. Since it takes a different filter for the new head, you kill two birds with one stone.

??? as far as I know the fuel filter is identical for the 1s and 2n gen filter head and the 2n gen head comes with one installed. Now if you do a non-OEM filter head install on an 05/06 (ex. Racor) that's a different matter.
