Sorry about the thread title - I just had to.

Chrysler agrees to recall of Jeeps at risk of fire

Chrysler knuckled under to the Feds on the Pinto Problem. Their solution?

Quote:
Chrysler said Tuesday that dealers will inspect the vehicles and install trailer hitches to protect the gas tanks. The company said vehicles without hitches will get them, as will those with broken hitches or hitches that aren't from Chrysler.

So pull that Draw-Tite off and sell it while you can, because the bottom is going to drop out of aftermarket hitches pretty soon.

The OEM hitch is a drawtight hitch.

That actually is not a bad fix - a lot more useful for the owners than a skidplate that weighs as much, but doesn't offer any useful features for an on-road vehicle.

Now... What about the top-of-the-tank leaks? Are they going to still drop the tanks and fix / upgrade whatever is causing the leaks? THAT is what my Grand Cherokee needs. I already have a hitch, I believe it is a factory one. (Bought the ZJ used)

Are they going to count Diesels??

they're not as flammable

and I have the Rock Lizard rear bumper with a built in hitch (and a tank skid plate)

not sure if they'd stack a hitch on there too.

Thats actually a very good question, anybody can confirm if crd would be included? And also what would happen if customer has already a hitch?

R2.0, do you have a link with the recall that you can share? The one you posted has a 404 error. The one I found

http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2013/06/ ... risk-fire/

Doesn't specify anything about crds, but I'd guess they would include all models.

TJ, is that 100% accurate?? With a rating of 750/7500????

My OEM hitch was made by drawtight, sold it years ago.Depends on what OEM hitch you have it's either a classIII or classII and the classIII is only 500/5000lbs since the KJ is not rated for anything above 5000lbs.

If you do not need a hitch installed for whatever reason and you still get the recell just "Because it's free'" don't forget where the money to pay for it comes from...

I saw the link on another website - it was a direct link to the AP story, so I'm surprised it died.

Per the AP story, if there's an aftermarket hitch installed they will replace it with a Chrysler hitch. I'm guessing that it's the hitch only; they stand to make a little money back on installing the harness "while we're in there" for a mere $400.

Any word on the REAL failures, the leaking tanks?

Seems all the press reports are curiously silent on this, when NHTSA was making a stink about the fuel leak potential too...

Thanks, I didn't know/think about harness... i think I'll have to wait till somebody will go to have this done or I'll ask in person, in my case I may tell them to eff off, I have a hitch and harness that I installed, not worth to get another one, especially with a genius doing the work...

I just pulled my aftermarket hitch off when I did my lift pump, and I broke one of the mounting (rust seized) bolts in the process.
Think the would have to pull the broken Bolt for me? Would save me a headache!

I'd say its part of "broken hitches". You can tell them you wanted to help and take out the hitch, lol.

"The company said vehicles without hitches will get them, as will those with broken hitches or hitches that aren't from Chrysler."

But I'd make sure they will put all bolts back, you may run into a lazy technician that would just skip it.
