Has anybody bought the timing tool kits available on the web for the CRD. From the UK? Seems like a decent deal. Comes with a few more tools than necessary for the timing job on the crd but it has the 3 locking pins, tensioning tool and some stuff for a 2.5 crd all in a hard plastic case for $115.00 delivered. |

There's also a set from Laser at a similar price. Search the forum and you'll find who's used them. |

I have the Sealey set from the UK, used it on my top end rebuild. A lot of people reported issues with eh VM.1089 and getting it into the flywheel, I had no problem with the Sealey equivelent. |

Just to clarify on the VM 1089. If the flywheel is in the proper position the VM tool will insert into the flywheel hole just fine provided that the unprotected threads in the bell housing are not so full of crud as to prevent the tool from threading into the bell housing. Obviously one can take the trouble to clean out the threads, if so I'd recommend inserting some sort of plug to prevent the problem in the future, or one can use the 6mm Allen key method per the 05 FSM. |

What I didn't like about alan key was that you can still slightly move it left/right, versus the set tool, that has only one position. It went straight in for me, once crank was at 3 oclock and I sprayed some pb blaster in the hole. |

Thanks for the feed back gentlemen. I ordered my kit last night from a place called the "Tool Academy" located across the pond in the UK. It was $115.00 u.s.d. and that's delivered.  Seems like a great deal!......... Unless of course it takes a ridiculously long time to get here in which case I'll be sad because I have a box of brand spank'in new parts that just arrived from I'd parts and I'm chomping at the bit to bust my kunckles.

If memory serves right, I got them from tool academy too, on ebay, took 10-ish days to get the package from when I placed the order, so no reasons to worry. |

Welp, my timing tools came yesterday and I must say I'm very pleased with the quality overall. Now its time to bust some knuckles.

I have the sealy timing tools. I broke the tensioner adjuster, though due to my own fault. While adjusting tension, if you have the tensioner bolt close to tight and adjust tension, it is possible to tighten the bolt down due to rotating the tensioner. This puts more resistance on the tensioner then needed and the tool can fail. I ended up using some snap ring pliers to finish the job. Just an FYI. The tools all worked, just be aware when adjusting the tensioner. |

Does this tool kit have every thing needed to do the job? Or did you have to purchase other specialty tools? |

The kit contains the 3 "pins" necessary to lock the cam shafts and the crank shaft in place to maintain timing. It also has a tensioning tool to tighten up the timing belt tensioner. There are additional pins included with the kit for the 2.5 crd as well. I can't attest to how well they work as I've yet to replace my timing belt due to working out of state but other members speak highly of the Sealy kit. |

Don't you also need a way to hold the cam sprocket? I thought I remember reading that this was the most expensive tool and hard to find. People have been using a VW cam sprocket holder. Or is this what the pins take care of? |

You need to have a cam holding tool if you are taking the cam gears off (only if replacing the water pump). I made my own out of angle steel I bought at Lowe's. Similar to the beezfarm one. The cam pins only locate the cams with respect to the crank, they will not hold any amount of torque that is required to get the cam gears loose, or tighten them (80 ft - lbs). The parts and pins of the sealy kit worked good, though they didn't come with labels, unlike what I have seen posted here, so I was matching up the parts. Also, I was a little unsure of the amount of torque to use to get the pins in. While they should go in pretty easy, I had to use a pair of pliers to get them all the way tight. Also, note that there is a copper washer on the back of the plugs for the cams... don't loose one like I did. Luckily my neighbor had a little harbor freight copper washer kit deally and I was able to use one of his. Please let me know if you have any more questions. |

Just finished my second TB job and used the UK tool kit from the guy on ebay. It worked perfectly, I even used the flex plate locking pin. Definitely worth the money. |
