The machine shop said they need to take off 4 to 6 thousandths off the head. They said the head was slightly warped Is this OK?

The dealership that my brother took the Jeep to disassembled the engine and tossed the head gasket. Where can I find the exact info and chart on measuring the protrusion of the piston? Or is it the liner? To get the correct head gasket?

What is the torque spec and sequence for the head bolts and/or ARP studs?

Should I use the ARP studs or head bolts?

1. don't know if that's acceptable but you might query some folks who have dealt with head problems. LMWatBullRun comes to mind.
2 and 3. complete morons. Probably in the FSM and sequence would be the same; download a copy from Sam's NOOB guide
4. from the chat if I was in that far I would not hesitate at all to use ARP studs and IIRC washers. Also IIRC the ARP studs come is sets of XX cheaper than buying one at a time but if you get sets, 2 needed if memory serves, you will have extras. My point being if you go the ARP stud route you might post a query about picking up extras from a few folks so you don't have to buy the 2n set; seems to me by now spares should be available.

I would not machine the head. If it is warped underneath it is also warped on top; this will affect the cam shaft holder.

Your choices are:

New head;
Reman head;
Used good head;
Take warped head to a straightening specialist;
Install the old head with new ARP studs and torque it down flat.

Installation sequence is in the FSM. Zigzag the interiors then do the outer ones in a loop.

Check the ARP stud thread for the stock numbers for the set of studs, nuts and washers, there are 10 per set. You need 18.

I am waffling here between having the head repaired, A new head, a reman head or a reman engine. The Jeep has 140,000 miles on it. I have no idea the condition of the bottom end.

I did not see this the first time I looked. "Install the old head with new ARP studs and torque it down flat'

I did not realize that was even an option.
Is this a good option?

Does anybody have a good source for a head?

What does it cost to have the head straightened? I it cost effective or result history effective, compared to the other alternatives?

Where can I get this done?

Does anybody have any advice on where to turn at this point? I am actually leaning towards getting the long block from a dealership now.

Bottom line is I would like opinions on where I will get the most bang for my buck.

Thanks

I'm in a similar situation as you are, but my Liberty only has 74000 miles. I going down the Mopar re-manufactured long block engine path. If I had it to do over, I would have tried the ARP head studs approach.

If you want to re-surface the head, there are head gaskets for removing 0.004" or 0.008" of material for of the head. But I'd just do the ARP studs only first.

Do you have a link or reference as to where to buy these thicker head gaskets?
