It isn't the 2200 mile drive that risks the timing belt... It is just mileage period. The belt doesn't really get torqued by faster / slower / faster / slower of daily driving, versus many hours of continuous spinning at highway speeds. It is just constantly flexing whenever the engine is turning.

Maybe you have more than enough life to make that 2200 mile drive, or maybe you only have to the end of your driveway? That is why there is a maintenance schedule. Some engineer figured out how much abuse the belt would be capable of based on whatever testing they did on it, and then said "Belt lifespan / service interval is [breaking point divided by half] so that there is a safety factor built in to account for manufacturing differences / tolerances, and for a statistical sampling of people to exceed either the mileage or age by some margin without incurring belt failures.

Within that statistical range however, there are outliers on both ends. Some people lose the belt very early in both age and mileage, one crazy lunatic didn't even know he HAD a timing belt and managed to put 197k on the original before learning and changing it!

So with that, can you make the trip? I don't know, and as always... Your Mileage May Vary.

Alright, I am about to finally do my timing belt. I am at 90K/7 years now, and want to do this in the next month or so. Anyone up for a timing belt get together? I am either borrowing the tools from another member on here (will not mention who), or I may just break down and buy the tools from one of my suppliers. Figured maybe we could bang out a few of these at the same time? Any interest?

Interesting timing. (Pun intended) I'm currently figuring out the logistics of going to West Grove to do a timing job on another member. How close is that to you?

Thanks for the offer, But I may find a few more things to take care of when I get things tore down! ie Rockers, Intercooler Cleaning, who knows.....Might take me more than a few days. BTW....Still waiting on the Sealy tools, ordered on the 8th.

Sounds like everyone is going it alone? I hope not, because here is an option for everybody to consider: I will most likely be driving to NYC next week (starting to travel from South Florida on the 28th) and I would be suggesting a central meeting place at a hotel somewhere just south of Philadelphia along I-95. My plans have me on the way back from NYC on Friday or Saturday for this, I would be happy to leave early to arrive at the CRD-timing hotel at about 9AM or so. I had been discussing with Everett about doing his timing belt alone, BUT if there are just 2 others that want to jump in on this, I will do it for a group rate of $400 each, and no travel costs! Thats right, JUST the discounted labor for three or more CRD timing jobs! By myself, I can do each CRD in about 3 hours, possibly less. With assistance and sharing of tools, all the CRDs should be up and running again by mid afternoon. I would be willing to discuss water pumps and glow plugs, but anything more serious probably doesn't want to be done here. Thoughts?

My issue is A: finances. My main issue is getting down there on that date. My wife has to work, and I have to be here to care for the dogs, so going far for a long period of time won't work, at least not then. Any ideas? My parents live in Wilmington, DE, not far from I-95. They have a 2-car garage (which is usable to service a vehicle as they park both of their cars in there). This is why I was thinking of tackling this myself, time, money, and logistics.

Still looking for either a tool to borrow or a print so I can make a few Sean Got my timing belt done last week at 99K on the odo (2005 bought new in sept 2005), in fact the day prior did a 600 mile trip towing..which I REALLY did not want to do. also did WP, Hayden fan clutch, glow plugs, thermostat, fuel filter and coolant change. Of course I forgot to get a air filter and did that the next day. It took about 9 hours with a friend who is a experienced mechanic at a Jeep dealer, using brand new miller tools the dealer had paid for and never used ... It was his first CRD Timing belt and in fact he freely admits that without LostJeeps and Sir Sam's excellent write up it would have taken him longer and he would have been MUCH less confident in the results. He in particular didn't like the lack of keying... That said the timing belt was in better than I expected condition, but it was starting to have fine cracks. Judging by the pictures others have posted my timing belt was in better than normal condition.

To add, the CRD in other markets with the same timing belt has a 60,000 mile suggested service life. Less than the 100,000 over here. (edit - I'm geographically challenged, and there are far too many "west" locations in Pennsylvania.) The location is approximately 37 miles from Philly's airport, just northwest of I-95. Sorry for any confusion.
