 Post subject: So I ignored the advice and took the plunge

Hi Everyone,

I have been on the site for a few months gathering info and have made a couple of posts. Despite getting some feed back telling me to run away, I was stubborn and took the plunge. I do all of my own work on my cars and have to deal with similar issue on my Legacy GT, so I figured I could handle it.

I found a 2006 CRD Limited with 42k miles. It was in great shape and drove very well. The only issue I have encountered so far is a rattle in the rear door(not the glass). It seems to be the latch as it rattles when I slam the door shut.

Here is the only pic I have at the moment:

It still has temporary tags so I won't be driving it until I get my MA plates. While its sitting in the garage, I may order the GDE eco tune and possibly the transmission tune.

Congrats on the purchase that is super low miles..... good find man. good luck with it I am sure you will be fine with it. I do Highly recommend the GDE tune.. I have had the ECO for like 3 years now worth it for sure.

Be very careful pulling the TCM if you go with the transmission tune. The wiring plug is on there really tight and takes some wiggle/careful prying to remove. More importantly the bolt that holds it on engages a nut captured, apparently, in the back side of the plastic housing and too much torque during reinstall can "spin" the nut in which case any future removal of the plug will be extremely difficult.

Rattle in the back door is an easy fix - Tighten the giant torx screws, they have worked themselves loose.

Congrats on the purchase, and welcome to your new Italian mistress. Don't let her know about any girlfriends or wives you might have... She is a NASTY wench when annoyed. :wink:

Congratulations. Looks like a nice vehicle. I have an '06 also, and have been very happy overall. We're right over the border in NE Connecticut. You don't see very many around here.

You know about ID parts in Mass? They are good folks and carry a lot of parts for the Jeep.

Don't forget: The timing belt is now over 7 years old and needs to be replaced. Mine was ready to go at 91K. Lots of cracks and dry rot. You likely won't need a water pump or idlers/tensioners at that mileage, but you may want to do them while in there. Good luck with the new rig. Looks good!

Beautiful plunge, keep her like that with a GDE tune. About the TB it would be a good idea to at least check it out. I have an 05 with 95k miles and replace the belt 1000k miles ago. I put all I removed out away in the storage in a box as nothing really showed signs of serious wear (water pump, idlers, tensioner, and belt) just like when I did the TB on the libby sport I had, but some others report serious wear from time only.

Congrats on the purchase! Wow, that's low mileage for a 7yo vehicle. If you enjoy working on vehicles, spending money on them and treat it as a hobby vehicle rather than your primary transportation it's not a bad choice. You've got a great opportunity to add the GDE tune early in it's life before too much damage is done.

I noticed a clunk/rattle coming from the rear end a few months after purchasing mine new. Took it to the dealer and the mechanic went straight to the rear door latch. Must be a common problem with these.

Thanks for the advice everyone!

While were all here, how do I find out if mine has received the F37 flash? I took a look at the MFG date and it appears to be 12/9. Based off what I have read here, that means I have the 2nd gen torque converter from the factory but its not clear if it was factory flashed to F37.

Very early 05s had a torque convertor with some sort of plastic part that self destructed almost on the way off the dealer's lot so I've heard. It's essentially certain all those got replaced long ago. The rest of the 05s and all 06s got the same TC at the factory but that TC was still on the weak side for the engine's power output so rather than do a big recall to replace all of those TCs, which is what should have been done, DCJ elected to program the ECU to reduce engine power output and program the TCM to raise the transmission shift points (a.k.a. F-37). If your final shift point is at ca. 62-63mph then you have the post F-37 TCM tune. Some CRDs that went to the dealer for the F-37 escaped so to speak with the TCM not being flashed.

FYI the GDE EcoTune essentially reverses the F-37 ECU tune plus a lot of other good stuff like better mpg and vastly less soot in the intake. Well worth the money ASAP. The regular GDE TCM tune pretty much restores the pre F-37 shift points but won't do much for mpg unless you do a lot of city driving.

Congrats on your new ride, looks like you got a good one.

I'll second the recommendation that you do the timing belt based solely on age. Having one break on you will ruin your whole day. And while you are in there, replace the fan clutch with the Hayden 2905 unit. The stock fan clutch is a piece of junk.

My 2005 is one of those that got the F37 TC replacement, but missed the flash, as the shift point remains 57 mph, rather than 62. I've also gotten the GDE ecotune, and find it worth every penny. I've gotten 34.75 mpg on a tank spent almost entirely cruising at 60 mph (and very carefully filling to make sure I measured what was really going on).

Wow, thats low mileage. And from the pic, it looks like new. Congrats, good luck and I also second GDE tune, propper turbo cooldown, and timing belt - which, if you do it yourself, would be just 80-ish bucks for the belt, no need to replace anything else at this mileage.

Having done 4 now, I wish I could just think of a timing belt as "Just $80."

There's no part about it that I think it's $80, especially all the labor and tooling it takes to get in there correctly.
