Rebuild Or Replace

Hey, I have had my CRD for about 2 months and had a few common issues that I got sorted out and finally got it running GREAT!! As soon as that happened it died with a head gasket issue(or so I though) that was just the start of my adventure, I got my parts lined up and started the job. The timing belt was in great shape as it was replaced by PO about 5000KM ago. Once I got head of to replace gasket I found major damage to all pistons, two cracks in the #3 cylinder sleeve and a head that is absolutely trashed, as a valve let go and got hammered in between head and piston. Im confident the PO had a timing belt let go and he replaced belt got jeep running and sold it quickly. So my question Does anybody know where I could find a good used engine thats not going to cost me a fortune. Or some options to rebuild. However from what i'm seeing it's going to be way more expensive as I need complete head, pistons, sleeves and thats just the very short list I haven"t looked any closer. After seeing the damage the jeep has been pushed outside and put in timeout while I sort out some options??? Any help would be great Thanks

Yea the though has crossed my mind! I do think it would look great in the PO living room as well.

Wow that sucks. It will be an expensive repair. I would be surprised if it was sold with a dropped valve. It wouldn't run well and make a hell of a racket. If it survived for over 3000 miles like that, that would be impressive. Good luck with it.

I dont think it was sold with a dropped valve but I think it was sold with known internal damage. That aside eventually the damaged components let go leaving me with what I have now. Does anybody know if other 2.8 CRD's from the grand Voyager, nirto, or colorado will work with the liberty? wiring harness, mounts etc?

As far as I know, none of the other engines will cross over to the CRD.

What are the options for you in Alberta? Any laws that might help you, about the seller sticking you with a vehicle that has obviously had severe problems?

This repair certainly won't be cheap, and the thought of getting rid of it starts to be a good idea. I've heard that swerving to avoid a moose is a dangerous thing to do in an SUV, it is very easy to flip and ruin the vehicle.

Sounds like flood damage/hydrolock. I'd make an insurance claim.

IDParts carries most of the stuff you will need, but given customs from the US to Canada you might be better off going to the English guy.

Having just done a partial rebuild, I would steer away from a junkyard used engine. Mine had wiped out all it's lifters and I was unaware of it - I only checked due to some strenuous advice from another member. With a used engine you are looking at a crapshoot.

One option would be to get a used core engine, build it on the bench, swap engines, and then sell your core. I only suggest this because, having pulled my engine and then worked on it in the basement for WAY too long, I forgot a lot of the little details from the removal process which bit me in the booty on the reinstall. If you are motivated you can replace the engine in a day, assuming a bare long block and someone to help.

Or park it on the train tracks.

Trust me the moose option, flood option, train tracks and cliff have all come to mind. However I have had some luck today in finding a wrecked 2006 with a good engine locally at a great buy and complete with everything. Its about time I get some luck I should be getting the engine here in a couple days and hopefully I will get the swap done as well in a couple days. Any issues to look out for while doing the swap? No major issues with the 2005 body and the engine being for a 2006?

2005 / 2006 are identical. You still have the computer from yours, so you don't need that. Mechanical parts should all interchange.

I would strongly suggest popping the valve cover on the new engine and having a GOOD look at all the rockers before you attempt installation. If any questions, replace all the rockers. Your top end (valve cover and above) should all be fine, I would also suggest retaining YOUR injectors and install them in the order that they match up with the big barcode sticker on the timing cover. Each injector has a 6-digit code on it that will match with part of that barcode. This is important for the computer, it controls the fuel trim and affects the efficiency.

Thanks for the Info I will have to get my injectors cleaned and tested as they were NASTY when they came out of old engine, Covered in a thick oil/coolant slime. I have taken a close look at the engine and it does look really nice, Rockers check out and I have boroscoped inside and don't see any damage internally. Im going to change the glow plugs over to mine as well as there are the new steel ones, so my computer will be programmed for that as well. Also im going to do timing belt and components while engine is out prior to install as it was easier now and engine has 90,000KM on it. Since I had the head gasket failure on my old engine along with the rest im going to flush the rad and get my intercooler cleaned as there was alot of oil in it from old engine. Any other suggestions or ideas for preventive maintenance I can do now to save me down the road. Thanks again for the help and im sure over the next week ill be looking for more pointers along the way.
