Post subject:  Oil Drain Plug Issues
First of all hello, sorry to make my first post a cry for help. Been lurking for awhile and recently picked up a CRD. Doing the first oil change today I noticed the drain plug wasn't the usually hex style. Then when I started to remove it saw that it was coming out quite lopsided. I'm guessing the previous owner ruined the original threads and shoved in an oversized plug. I immediately stopped removing the plug because I fear it might not go back on. So now I have a few questions:
-Will it be possible to drain the oil by simply removing the oil filter?
-What are the recommended ways or fixing this? (Rethread the oil pan?)

Ya, that sux. No, it won't drain the pan dropping the oil filter. Only option for repairing the threads is a helicoil. Other option is a new pan. You could possibly have a threaded boss welded in, but cast aluminum welds like crap and any cast metal is very porous and soaks up oil, making it that much worse. Aluminum is particular about the way it's welded. I have a just a few posts on this forum, but I Work for caterpillar. I'm around engines daily.

Good for you, that was my solution that Papaindigo linked, and I was just about to suggest it. I never had a problem with that repair.

Got the heli-coil kit. Took my plug out and found that the pan was re-taped by previous owner. It looks like they didn't make it very straight tho and so they used Teflon to stop the leak.

The size they used was even bigger than the repair kit. Image

So for now I added a washer and fresh Teflon, and plan on retaping the pan on the next oil change. Only plug I could find bigger was this 22mm.

But I'm thinking about shopping around for a larger version of the fumoto valve possibly :| :?:

I have always stayed away from the Fumoto because of potential to be sheared off during a ground strike.

FOund the same thing with the truck I just purchased...Tapped it from the M16 to m18 thread and installed a grainger no spill drain kit...Not that much bigger then the original plug, and relatively cheap

It is not clear to me how that plug works. Is there more to it than just the knurled cap?

Hasn't happened to me yet in 125,000 miles on my Liberty, and over 250k miles of use in previous vehicles.

and if you have a decent skid plate - not an issue

(Mopar - does not make my 'decent' list - try a used Superskid - or a Skid row)

My CRD doesn't see much offload other than a few mild trails so I installed I Fumoto with the nipple over 80,000 miles ago. Works great for my needs.
