I bought my 06 without the tow package but had the "stealer" have 'a' tow package installed aftermarket. The garage that did the install is supposedly licensed or somehow certified to do these installs, and they told my dealer something like this:

The CRD comes with such a large trans cooler already that there is no space for anything larger.

It appears that they had the tranny pan down and there is residue of tranny fluid (that they didn't wipe up) on the engine cover. And of course there is a class III hitch hanging off the back.

So to summarize my question: What comes with a "factory" tow package vs. what I can't see with an aftermarket installation?

As per the Jeep Factory web site.

7-Pin Wiring Harness
7-to-4-Pin Wiring Adaptor
Heavy Duty Engine Cooling
Class III Hitch Receiver
Power Steering Cooler

I got all of that as I got the factory tow package

I did see that when I bought the CRD. That is the reason why I insisted that they installed a complete package and not just a hitch and wiring.

Is there anything you can physically see with your eyes that says "I am a trailer towing package" other than just the class III hitch?

Where is the "power steering cooler" and what is "heavy duty engine cooling" consist of?

I apologize for sounding like a wise stupid ijn my last reponse. Not intended to be that way but after I reread my post, Oh Well, anyway I haven't found the PS cooler but the HD CS can consist of any or all of the following,

Larger radiator
Larger capacity water pump
Larger thermostat housing and thermostat

This means that unless you know what it looks like before you can't always tell about the upgrades. You can also go the the parts manual and see if ther are optional components in the cooling system.

I expect my Factory Service Manual (FSM) any day and I will check what is in it. The service manual usually covers all the options on the vehicle

If you look up under your front bumper, you'll see the power steering cooler, trans. cooler, etc. They are a series of smaller radiators with lines running off of them to the various parts that they cool. My understanding is that CRD models come with all of the cooling standard, so all you need is a hitch and the wiring. I cannot confirm this because mine came with factory towing package...its just the way I understand it from the owners manual.

the dealer was told and relayed to me. I let them know that I would be towing in the upper ranges (3500-5000 lbs) anywhere from maybe 1 hour to 5-6 hour drives one way and I needed the correctly installed items.

There will be some pretty expensive explatives spoken if anything goes wrong with this thing because the dealer didn't want to get me a vehicle with the factory setup already installed from another dealer.

You're also going to need a trailer brake module installed, the 7 pin socket will give you the power for your trailer brakes and the charging wire to your trailer battery if you have one.
