Belt Tensioner and possible U-Joints

Post subject:  Belt Tensioner and possible U-Joints
I got to put on the Belt Tensioner today, but I don't think that is all of my problem. I'm getting a faint rumbling while driving. Like one guy said on here, feels like I'm going over the stop sign alerts or side of road bumps.

Are the U-Joints available at local Auto-part stores? What brand should I replace them with?
This Jeep CRD (blue) has 187,000 miles. I believe that it sat a while before it got fixed up and then I bought it. Nothing worse on u-joints and ball joints then to sit for some time. :)

This Jeep CRD (blue) has 187,000 miles. I believe that it sat a while before it got fixed up and then I bought it. Nothing worse on u-joints and ball joints then to sit for some time. :)


Get it on a lift and check both front wheel bearings before you start changing U-Joints. If you haven't done them yet, 187k is plenty long life for them. I changed mine around 85k.

If you get it on a lift or jacked off the ground, roll the wheel freely, and if there's a WHUMP WHUMP WHUMP (Don't even get me started, laughed typing it) noise then it's your bearings.

They're a sealed unit and they come with the ABS sensor in them, it's just your Rim, Axle Nut, then 3 star bit bolts to take them off the axle IIRC, may be Torx.

Anyways, it may be the Universal Joints as well, but you should definitely check those bearings.

Okay, thanks. I'll check them also. Are the U-Joints OEM special or can i pick them up at the auto parts store. Same with the bearings.

U Joints are U Joints, I would recommend you check to be sure, but I think MOOG 269's fit ours, get the greasable type.

Well the wheel bearings seem fine. I'm thinking of taking the driveshaft out of my jeep and putting it in my wife's to see if I still get the vibration. I put it on a lift and ran the Jeep in drive and couldn't determine anything from that. So I'm really guessing here. Maybe it is a motor mount.

It only vibrates during acceleration. I've revved the motor with it not in gear and I don't feel the vibration. I think i'm LOST.


ok Update:
It was a u-joint. I didn't take my drive shaft off because I saw that one of the u-joints were bad once I got the drive shaft off of my wife's Jeep. I crushed one of the u-joints pins. Lack of experience installing u-joints.

Anyway: Next is the TB job on my Jeep. It is 21,000 miles overdue. Parts should be here on Monday.
