Hi All,

I figured I'd post here as the CRD forum is home turf.

Over the last four weeks, a new thing has developed: I'll hit a pothole (or similar bump) and there will be this really loud "THWACK" sound. Sounds like something loaded up giving way or getting hit by a crowbar...I mean, it's that loud. It's happening every few days, with no pattern other than the bump. The first time I heard it, it scared the be-jeezus out of me and I pulled over expecting to see my front coil spring poking up through the wheel well. Nope.

It sounds like it's coming from the front right wheel area.

I looked all around and everything looks good--nothing out of place or shiny metal to indicate a friction problem. I put the transmission in and out of 4WD to make sure things weren't binding and it makes no difference.

Ideas?

If it's not the failed engine mount dilemma, then it's the anti sway bar bushings that need to be lubed.

We all have the anti sway bar bushings noise happens when we go over a bump. There is a loud squeaking, crackling type sound. Nothing to worry about, it only happens when you go over a bump. Spray a little silicone around them,

If on the other hand its the engine mount, that will need to be replaced.

Thanks racertracer--I'll check out the sway bar.

I replaced the engine mounts last year, so I'd be amazed if they went bad that quickly.

Well, that seems to be it. I greased the bushings and have been running noise-free for three weeks.

Thanks, racertracer.

Ha--I just probably jinxed myself and now I'll hear it again first thing tomorrow.

I have those noises too. They come from different parts of the vehicle. Sometimes I think it's the motor mounts because when stopped at a red light the engine vibration is very noticeable and all of a sudden a loud pop and everything is smooth as glass.

Sometimes it feels like it comes from the rear axle area where the bars attach. Sometimes it sounds like it comes from the front right wheel area.

Just lots of pops!

Mine does exactly the same, have the front right mount on order so hopefully in the next few weeks I'll change it (along with the oil, glowplugs, alternator pulley, front hubs..... it never ends) and let you know if it cures the problem :D
