I installed a 2nd gen fuel head earlier this year but it seems it may be the cause of my staying problem the other day. Besides this, I disconnected the plug going to the heater because the wires on the harness were smoking!
I've read where some form members have installed aftermarket fuel heads to replace the factory one.

Can anyone provide brands and part numbers that will work with the least amount of hassle to install?

Sounds like you got another first gen fuel head if the wire was smoking. The second gen was brought in to fix the burned wire issue.

I have heard of fires being caused by that leaky connector.

I have the racor also. No issues. Huge filter for the little diesel, but I like clean fuel.

What ChooChooman said. That clean fuel is soooo important for every diesel along with .........so many other benefits like the sight glass and add-on gauge. I'm satisfied with the Racor too.

I pulled my fuel heater relay years ago and put it in the console as a spare. I have installed a large fuel cooler that I do not cover up in winter with no issues. if I lived in Alaska or Northern Canada, I may install an aftermarket fuel warmer that would only come on in the coldest weather. In the Midwest, I have not ad a problem with fuel ranging from Dino to B-20 in the winter.
For me, only outlived Government Regulations are more useless than the fuel heater.
Racor makes a good fuel head and filter (I use the 2 micron). Had I not made my Mopar to Racor adapter that I am still using, I would have bought the Racor head, made the WIF adapter I posted the drawing of, removed the fuel temp sensor in the old head, mounted it into a plug with a blind hole using epoxy, and got on with life.
Here is a drawing of the WIF adapter I made, not rocket science.
