Smoke from your EHM? Found a solution.

If you are like me and have your EHM dangling down somewhere behind the radiator, you
probably notice some smoke rising in front of your headlights while stopped at a light.
For $8 I got one of these breather vents, 3/4" size, and clamped it to the end of my hose.

No more mystery smoke! :lol:

Benefits include:
1. the filter in the cap diffuses smoke/vapors making your EHM farts less noticable
2. it keeps EHM oil drips off your driveway
3. its cheap
4. it keeps random strangers from running up to you saying "hey, hey, your Jeep is
smoking!" (unless this is how you like to pick up women

)
5. its chrome and you know that every ounce of chrome = 5 horsepower

Even though i have a Provent and it works great. I would not install another or even do a EHM mod. It has been proven that CCV oil dose not hurt anything as long as the EGR is stopped. Mixing these two is bad. Some even think CCV oil adds lucubration, but I would not go that far.

No real engine issues with the EGR blocked, but the oil from the CCV does hurt your intake
and boost hoses.

Will that breather have the potential to clog over time and pressurize the block? I would worry about freeze up in winter months if in the north.

Its not something I think about when living in Florida.
What is the current solution to a freezing EHM?

With the GDE tune I don't bother with an EHM or Provent so I don't know for sure but I've seen comments about putting some strategic small slits in the EHM hose. Should work. In normal operation the EHM hose is not pressurized so the slits would be closed but if the EHM hose end gets plugged for whatever reason the resulting pressure should open the slits to relieve the pressure before blowing a rear main seal as has happened at least once.

The only solution to a frozen EHM pipe (if it pressurized the block) would be a new front or rear main seal and about $1000 in labor. In Florida you most likely never have to deal with that.

Even in Florida, that filter can still clog. Keith, BTW, what do you think about Geordi's contention that the stock CCV system closes up at higher RPM, just when you would least want it to? Do you run the EHM on either of your KJ CRDs?

Hmmm...

I guess it could get clogged externally from road dirt and stuff.
Best to keep it out of the dirt and mud. Certainly would not want to take it through any
water crossing.
I cant see it getting clogged internally. There should be no solids coming out of the EHM.
If it did happen to fill up with oil, you would notice drips as CC pressure pushes some oil out.
But it is cheap and easily replaceable.

Probably the best practice would be to keep the hose and everything contained within the
engine compartment. I've noticed that some people have placed their home made Provent like
thingys inside the air filter box. The same could be done with this breather filter.

I had my own home made Provent like thingy. It worked, but it didnt trap enough oil to keep
me happy. Thats why I went to straight EHM.

From what i have seen. There has been more problems with EHM mods than if you did nothing and left it stock. (plugging, freezing, blown seals, smells, leaks)

Just don't over fill the oil and be sure EGR is stopped.

I run an EHM. For summer, I put a longer hose and take it back to about the rear axle. For winter I use a shorter hose with several slits. Neither one has ever leaked oil out the end. The winter version with slits on top of the engine lets out a couple drops over the season.

YMMV, It seems the opinions on this board are taking on kind of a nasty know-it-all tone. Nobody knows it all.

Where do the drips go? Will it saturate eventually?

I saw this and I remembered the post about plumbing it into the airbox. Maybe this filter inside the airbox might be a soloution?

I cut 4 slits in the bottom of the hose...kinda opens up like a flower, put another slit farther up on the hose in case the bottom gets plugged. So far, haven't had a problem.

My EHM is open to the air at the end. But I was concerned that winter driving would result in a frozen up outlet. I used a knife to put a couple of slices on the EHM hose about half way down. With no pressure the slices in the hose are pretty much closed, but if any pressure builds up the slices will open up and relieve the pressure. So far no issues.

I do empty it at every oil change interval, (6000 miles). Sometimes earlier because it fills and spills into the air box, never measured the amount that's in there though. Also, change the air filter at the same time, it tends to get dirtier because of the mod. In the picture you can't tell but inside the PVC pipe there is one of those old school pcv breathers that were used in the carbureted engines.

EDIT: For anyone attempting this please note all the tiny pin holes in the top of the contraption so that the vapor/gasses escape, this is not sealed.
