Post subject:  ECM, boost pressure sensor, and loss of power

My CRD has been sporadically loosing power on and off for a couple months now. I've checked all vacuum hoses and replaced one that was severely cut. I've changed the MAP sensor twice, with no change in symptoms. I've also changed the pressure sensor on the side of the airbox. I have also tried running it with the ORM, but no such luck in solving the problem.

Here are my symptoms:

*Sporadic and worsening power/accerlation-smooth ideling, no smoke
*Oil soaked MAP sensor. I have replaced it two times with BOSCH 0281002845
*Oil coming out around the CCV and covering engine block
*P0107, P0299, and P0069 have been codes that come and go.

I took it to the dealer this morning and they said I needed a new ECM and "Boost Pressure Sensor". They said quote "The ECM had lost programming and the aftermarket boost pressure sensor was bad". I asked for the part numbers and they gave me RL044562CF for the ECM and 68031593AA for the boost pressure sensor.

So my question: is replacing the ECM necessary if it has just "lost programming"? Could is just be re-flashed or add the GDE tune?...or should I replace the ECM?

Thanks!

The dealer is not sharpest tool in the shed. If the engine runs, the ecm is good. The MAP may be bad or at least drifting due to P0069 plausibility code. P0107 is a circuit high on the MAP sensor, could be wiring or a bad sensor. P0299 with minimal smoke means your EGR system is borderline clogged.

I might be a little more colorful than GDE regarding the dealer who just wants to throw parts, on your dime, at a problem until it 1) goes away or 2) you get tired of them. ECM "lost programming" is the functional equivalent of saying XXX computer program won't run because your PC's CPU is fried; excuse me if the CPU is fried the PC won't run. Anyway:
1. "68031593AA for the boost pressure sensor" translates to they want to stick you for a new MAP sensor which you have already done twice so I doubt that is the problem and your sure don't want to throw a 3rd one one there at dealer price + who knows how much labor for a 15 min. max. job.
2. there has been at least one case of P0299 being a vacuum hose issue. See viewtopic.php?f=5&t=61240
3. at least part of your problem may be related to the CCV and all that oil which could cause MAP problems notwithstanding MAP replacements. It's possible your CCV valve is bad (PN5114348AB) and letting too much oil to vent from the manifold into the intake system. Of course it's also possible that all that oil on the top of the engine is from a bad CCV seal (PN 5114347AA) or a bad CCV to air filter>turbo hose. I know the top of my engine has not oil. I'd suggest a degreasing with like GUNK (spray on warm engine and rinse off with water with emphasis on rinse not a heavy spray as you don't want water in electrical connections) then drive a bit to confirm source of engine top oil.
4. you might also run for a while with the boost pressure solenoid bypassed, after checking vacuum hoses, to see if that stops the problem. Bypass see viewtopic.php?f=5&t=70602&p=757348&hilit=boost+solenoid#p757348 PN is 4606226AC
5. EGR can be cleaned see viewtopic.php?f=5&t=59352&p=659410#p659410 and viewtopic.php?f=5&t=62495
6. with all that oil while it's probably not your issue it wouldn't hurt to pull the CAC hoses (boost hoses) to clean and inspect for leaks. In the process pull the air filter to turbo hose and check for a split on the bottom just in front of the trubo (on reinstall make sure upper end touches MAF sensor before tightening clamp) and check the turbo impeller for play (slight fore/aft ok barely perceptible side to side ok, more is a problem)

If you don't have a GDE tune? Get one ASAP. If you already have a tune. You need to Block or remove your EGR valve. It is most likely stuck open causing your issues. The EGR on these CRD's is the cause of several short and long term problems. Even with a tune it can cause issues. The sooner it's gone the better.

Good luck

Thank you everyone for your reply.

Papaindigo,

I took up your advice and did the boost pressure solenoid bypass. The jeep drove flawlessly with no CEL for 15 miles...the best it has done yet! I am cautiously optimistic that a new solenoid will solve the issue. I will likely clean/inspect the EGR this weekend just to cover the bases.

I can't tell y'all how appreciative I am of your advice.
