Fist time posting to the forum but I have used this site extensively for advice anytime I've done anything to my wifes CRD....

06 CRD bone stock engine with 96k purchased with 55k. Daily driver serviced methodically by myself since purchased. Here's the issue....

Driving home from work the jeep suddenly died on her as if key was switched off. Took me about 15-20min to get to her location. Checked fuel relay and electrical. All normal. CEL light on. Checked for air in fuel head as I know this seems to be an issue. None noted. Pulled the ecm fuse (#14) in the cab, jeep started and ran for about 2 miles then died again. Went home to get tow strap.. got back to the jeep it started right up and ran great all the way home (14 miles) I ran it hard and fast to see if I could kill it with no luck. Got in the driveway and rolled the window up and I swear as soon as I hit the window button it died and would not start. Disconnected the neg term on battery for 15-20 sec it fired right up. Left it running for 1-2 hrs with issues (I know its hard on the alternator disconnect but I just replaced it last week). Got in it tonight for another test and made it about 10 mile before it died, this time as I was decelerating and putting on my turn signal. Pulled the ecm fuse again for 15 sec and it fired right up and made it back home. Sooooo.... am I dealing with a crank sensor, bad ecm, or other issue. I'm a ways from a code reader and I'm not sure that the faults will show up anyway. A crank sensor is only about $60.

I know I'm going to get replies saying its air and I'm going to change filters and recheck that again tomorrow but I had that issue the first time I changed the filter and this is different but I'm going to double check to be sure. It runs absolutely great and when I rest the computer it STARTS INSTANTLY, no hesitation at all. Stupid gremlins! PLEASE HELP AS MY WIFE IS NOW DRIVING MY NISSAN Z!

Howdy Mcbride - Welcome to LOST - sorry about the circumstances.

your description sounds like electrical gremlins - and 06's had a special problem where they moved the fuel filter a bit to make way for an ESC pump - and the result was to cut wires and cause shorts near the fuel head - that's the first place to check.

also Liberty's in general - act flaky if the battery is low - because you turn on the computer before it'll try to start the engine - but normally that's just a no start, also the crank sensors die - but again they tend to be no start's.

as a note - the Noob guide has some general good links - might scan though that to see if anything's helpful.

Thoughts:
1. load test the battery. What's its CCA rating and how old is it.
2. 06 check wiring behind fuel filter mounting bracket for chaffing or cuts
3. how many miles on the fuel filter. I understand no air but if old it could be somewhat clogged.
4. any CEL and if so what codes.
5. check plastic "bar" running from key switch to ignition switch under steering column - see viewtopic.php?f=5&t=60575&hilit=ignition+switch&start=20 and viewtopic.php?f=5&t=61233&p=678574&hilit=+brother#p678574
6. crank position sensor can fail when hot - see viewtopic.php?f=5&t=64199&start=80 and viewtopic.php?f=5&t=66905

At the mileage I hope the timing belt has been done or will be done shortly.

Thanks for the prompt replies.

Brand new optima 1000cca battery installed last week with the alternator decoupler. Fuel filter replaced 6k miles ago (bout 6 months) so replacing it today to be certain. I'll check out the other issues today and post back.

My wife's CRD would die randomly with a failing crank sensor. All has been well since replacement.

Body control module. If it affects your windows and your engine dies at random, test the bcm.

The BCM does not have too much to do with the running of the engine.....probably coincidence that engine died when closing the windows.... more likely to be crank sensor or a wiring problem such as the wiring behind the fuel filter.

Not much that you can "test" on a BCM....it would need to be replaced as a last resort. :wink:

1. I don't see the load on the battery being an issue for randomly dieing
3. I was getting air in the fuel line/filter and the Jeep would die. Bleed the air out and would make it 40 miles. Until I replaced the hose and clips running from the tank to the metal lines the bleeding was part of a daily ritual.
6. My crank position sensor was the source of my problem but it wasn't just triggered when hot. It did die randomly though, but since it's replacement hasn't died. :BANANA:

So to update.

No air in fuel. No leaks found in fuel line. Applied a saline gel solution to the connectors back by the tank and ran it with no suction of gel from around the connector. No leaks anywhere in the fuel head to be found. No obvious shorts, rubs, or kinks in the wiring harness.

Crank Sensor will be here Friday. Will replace it tomorrow night and give another update.

Probably no help now, same problem I had. Crank sensor, is going to fix it.

Replaced the crank sensor and it appears the problem is solved. Took about 30 min without putting it on a lift, and I was able to get to it without taking anything else apart. Thanks for the help.

Passenger side of the motor, near the turbo downpipe, under a small heat shield.
