Working on the timing belt. Had everything going smoothly, too smooth. Go the belt on set the tensioner, turned over by hand and had my marks all line up, inserted cam pins one more time, removed them out plugs in, went to try to fire it up... It puts a few times them dies. Lots of smoke also. So figured I was off a tooth. I played with it for 4 hours. I can't figure it out. Unless I unplugged some important electrical connection that screws with it.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Ok so now I am a bit confused. I marked all my marks up. Cam pins and flywheel pins going in fine. Verified the flywheel pin was in all the way. Fuel pump marks lined up. I then removed them all and spun 180, cam pins and flywheel pin when in also. Fuel pump marks were off. I'd assume this is 180 form TDC... but why would the flywheel line up again? I don't under stand what is going on. Everything was marked before loosening the original belt. one would think if you could put them all back to the marks it would run. It almost seems like a the jeep has a sentry key that isn't reading. It pops over once or twice then dies. But I notice quite a bit of smoke. No one has any ideas?

Maybe your flywheel pin didn't go all the way in. You shouldn't be able to spin 180 and have it go in again.

From what I have read, if the flywheel pin doesn't go in at 90 after TDC, you are supposed to spin the crank 180 and try again.

Squeeto is correct, and the marks don't mean anything. If the pins go in then you're in time, but I would recommend rotating the crank 5-6 full revolutions with just the belt to ensure that you didn't get off 1 tooth on the crank when you put the belt on.

Who's procedure did you follow?

Do you have everything 100% back together?

I can't get it to run. It just pops twice then dies. I am questioning the fuel pump timing. I have the cam and flywheel marks lined up and all pins in. My previous marks on fuel pump lined up. However the factory mark is not lined up with witness mark. I noticed if I turn the engine over by hand until the flywheel and cam pins and marks all line up the fuel pump is not lined up ( my or factory marks). So is there two revolutions where the flywheel and cams can be set correctly? How would I know which revolution I would need for the fuel pump to be timed correctly?

And no it is not back together. I have just the belt on yet, point where sirsams video is when he first cranks it over

Does fuel pump timing matter on a common rail diesel?

No i just found out that the fuel pump has three rotation for one of the engine. So it can have three different positions. I guess now I am really confused as to what is going on. The crack and cam pins all spin in and out freely (drill bit in crack is horizontal). The fuel pump marks lined up. I don't know how to tell if i am tooth off anywhere as all my initial marks line up.

Maybe if I spun the fuel pump backwards it created an air void somewhere? No idea if it's possible or how to bleed past the fuel head.
Maybe it's electrical? Some mystery connection I undid. Argh very frustrating :banghead:

Fuel pump timing doesn't matter on a CRD. Start with the basics. Double check timing. Make sure all electrical connections are tight, battery cables tight, fuel filter primed, ect. If you have the crank and cam lock pins lined up, spin the engine TWO revolutions. Everything should line up again. If not, you have much bigger problems than just being off time.

Well I figured it out boys and girls. A tip for those who haven't done the TB yet... make sure to remove the COLD SIDE CAC HOSE.... must have not been able to suck enough air through the CAC. Wonder if that means I have a bunch and crap inside or if just naturally aspirated the engine can't suck through it all. Any how it runs. 8 hours of trouble shooting and it came down to a 11mm clamp and a taking the hose off the FCV... :banghead: Well time to finish it up now. Thanks for the ideas guys. Who woulda thunk it!

It should start regardless of tooth off, and should make noises if it's off. I think your issues may be (pure coincidence maybe) due to air in fuel, inverting the injector 4 plug with the cam position sensor (I think on this case would not start at all), my bet is it may be either some electrical plugs you forgot to plug back, either fuel issue. You can also loosen up an injector line to see if fuel goes through, either a return line to see if fuel comes out. And Yea, timing on the fuel pump won't prevent car from starting(did it myself by mistake), it just affects performance (throttle response, mileage) as I know.

That shouldn't have made a difference. Are you sure you don't have a rag stuffed in the intake somewhere or something?

Ok it's all done now. I am a bit embarrassed. Went to dinner with the lady and came back to work on it. Was happy that I got it running. Went to button it up and tried to move my blanket I set on the radiator. Sure as doo doo it got sucked into the CAC. Was a long night. Haha minus the blanket incident it would have been done last night. *shakes head*_

Where's my beer....

Mate this can happen to anyone.
Glad you sorted it - enjoy that beer.
Also on the good side your intuition was right - she was starved for air.
