Mine keeps running dead in 48 hours from even just a cell phone charger plugged in, so I want a new one. I'm leaning toward AGM batteries at O'Reilly Auto Parts. The AGM cells have good discharge rates - better than their Cold Cranking rating would suggest, but have lower amp-hour ratings. Other options are the ubiquitous Walmart batteries, but their warranty is terrible these days. Any other suggestions? |

Costco has a good one for less than $100. Been in my jeep for over 2 years and its still going strong. |

Well, I couldn't get it to charge decently, so I replaced it today. I got an AGM battery from Oreilly Auto. $157 including tax. The first time I hit the key I went "Wow!". I thought these things had weak starters. |

A good bet is East Penn or Johnson controls batteries. These are both available under many different names/ house brands. These are lead acid type. I use these and have had no issues. |

I would vote for Costco batteries as most often than not these batteries tend to fail in 3-5 yrs and Costco simply gives you a new battery along with the option of price protection. |

Sears Platinum Diehard batteries are AGM, that's why they're more expensive. AGM is absorption glass mat, which means the battery can be punctured and still won't leak any battery acid and is not effected by cold or hot temperatures causing fluctuations in voltages or amperes. Just saying, bit o' the education for those that didn't know. |

AGM IS ALSO "lead - acid", but it's absorbed glass mat, rather than flooded electrolyte. It's resistant to leaking, among other good things. |

There are good battery's and good correct battery's. The correct good battery is one with at least 800 COLD CRANKING AMPS. Diesels need lots of CCA! Advance Auto parts Gold is what I have. |

The AGM battery I have is listed at 775CCA, but in my experience, AGM's will handle harsh discharges better than a flooded battery will, same, too, with having low resistance for charging - they'll charge as fast as the alternator can put out. The guy in Oreilly's that sold it to me was a TDI guy and he'd had far better experience with them, than with the flooded ones rated much higher. |

Bought the group 34 AGM from advanced auto. Got out for $130 buying online for store pick up using a 30% of coupon code "trt30" http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp ... m+group+34 Cheaper than optima and weighs just as much. You can tell a lot about a battery by how much it weighs... The original optima was still in it from 2005  Anyhow battery does great and I have been very pleased so far with the test of weather here I last week in the teens it he nc mtns. |

You think those 2 weigh a lot,they are feather weights compared to a Platinum P1/P4 if you judge a battery by weight.A group 34 optima weighs 41lbs and a Sears Diehard Platinum P4 weighs 53lbs. The Platinum's construction holds more lead and acid so more power.The Sears Platinums are made by Odyssey(Enrsys).

I recently replaced a 4-yr old Interstate Megatron with a Die Hard Platinum P-1. The Interstate was in there when I bought my CRD last summer and started acting up this fall, wouldn't start if it sat for more than 48 hrs. I figured it couldn't handle the heavy draws and vibration. I am very pleased so far with the Die Hard Platinum (except the price). |

My choice to replace the 7 year old red top was a NAPA Legend, 850 CCA. Been working great for over a year. The original battery did not completely die or really give me any issues, just noticed cranking speed was slower and took a bit longer to cold start. |

I had the original Optima die as well as the replacement Optima (same group with slightly different batter terminals), not overly fast, but after a couple years, rather shorter than I would expect them to last at a premium price. I went to the Odyssey/Sears Platinum and have had much more reliable cold starts and no flaky electronics since. Not to say that Optima doesn't make a good battery, but the orientation and size of the cells internally (see Troy's post) do appear to give it a bit more grunt (CCA) and is why I'll stay with them (actually, the only thing I will still buy from sears). Also, the Die-Hard platinum with the silver plastic case looks kinda "trick" to me  Dan |
