I had a CRD and for 3 years and sold it, only to realize later that I kind of prefer it to the Excursion I drive for everything but long road trips. I enjoyed my time on the board and meeting a couple of you. As I near a forced transition out of my current job, I found my self looking up CRD's again and wondering if it's worth it. I found a White Limited CRD in GA for 10K with 87K miles, but don't want to drive down there for a wasted trip if it's not in decent shape. It has a snorkel which makes me wonder if it was a member. It is very tempting. What say you guys? |

I would choose the crd over the 6.0 Excursion any day.The 6.0 was plagued with problems and expensive ones at that. |

And the CRD isn't? The advantage to the CRD is better mileage and this forum. By now, all the problems should be well known. That said... Less than 15k of them were ever sold, probably less than 12k are still on the road. That is a LOW population for support and parts, for a vehicle with such problems. You'd need to think hard about what you really need it for. My TDI wagon can do 80% of what I asked my CRD to do... With 5% of the engine problems. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD |

There one in Chicago for 7200 with the belt change last year http://chicago.craigslist.org/nch/cto/4182553225.html |

Get the 4x4 ranger. It'll go anywhere most people need to go and with some weight in the bed (rocks) it'll get around pretty good. Parts are cheap, as hell. Engines are cheap, putting a new engine in a ranger is a $1500 endeavor, CRD is 5x that much. Parts are abundant, tons of aftermarket as well. Oil is cheaper, PM is cheaper. Unless you currently own a CRD and are stuck with it, buying one (especially used with over 20k miles) is just stupid. |

Geordi, which TDI wagon did you get. I looked at a 12 sportwagen and wasn't comfortable with whether the HPFP issue was resolved. That and I really want a 4x4/AWD. |

That Chicago vehicle looks rather suspicious to me given the number of typos, grammatical errors, and factual misstatements. |

I got a 2003 with the ALH engine, auto trans and 244k original miles on it. A year ago, plus a month, and it now has 284k, with just an injection pump rebuild, water pump and trans valve body needed. I did a Malone tune, nozzles and deleted the EGR... Well, just because. The injection pump was done b/c I suspected a problem, and Everglades Diesel found the quantity adjuster spring was completely broken. $800 later, they rebuilt and blueprinted the pump, it gets 37mpg all day on the highway... At 81 by GPS. Where in ga is this CRD? I might be persuaded to have a look at it for you. Pm me or call me and we can work out the details. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD |

I have come across a couple high mileage 07-08 WK CRD's for 13-14k, but I know less about them and don't like the DPF idea. I am out right now, but may try to test drive one when I get back. About now my favorite idea is an early bronco with a 4bt, but that is a lot of weight in a little truck. It would be fun though not very practical. I am seriously thinking about another KJ unless the WK would be worth it. It seems there is less knowledge around about them than the KJ, at least with the limited bandwidth I have right now. Geordi, I will PM you, thanks. |

Well - I didn't vote I think choosing a vehicle tends to be a decision you need to make based on your needs and abilities, not an opinion poll. There aren't any new CRD's - they're all getting older - and the vast majority with at best - by the book maintenance - which isn't good enough. so you need to think about how much do you drive? where? do you tow? do you really need 4x4 for snow? for serious off-road? and probably most important - how comfortable are you working on it? there really aren't many good CRD mechanics, the best tends to be a knowledgeable owner. if the CRD fits - then there really isn't anything else in the same category. |

I voted for the Ranger only because I wouldn't purchase another CRD but also wouldn't get the 6.0 in the Ford. I would go with a 7.3 Excursion if possible. I have the 7.3 in my 96 f350 and love it. I did own a 99 Madza truck (same as Ranger) and had 0 issues for 200K before I parted ways with it. |

Get back in the CRD.... I have 2 other vehicles and the CRD is what I love to drive. I totaled my first one and couldn't wait to get into another. |

Racer, I have been toying with this since about a month after I sold the other CRD. The only thing I have done with the Excursion I couldn't have done with the Liberty is carry a torpedo dolly in a crate (700 lbs-ish, 7'x3.5'x2.5') and still shut it in the rear compartment. Last night I found an 06 with just under 21k miles for a little more than the one I originally found and it's closer to me. I'd still need to change the timing belt due to age and I don't like the color (red) but it looks immaculate. I think I could likely sell my Ex and about break even on the Liberty. |

There's one that wants $17,000 for his because it only 66,000 miles on it. |

To some point it used to be sort of a Mercedes, when Daimler owned vm motori, but the engine was never designed by Mercedes... When I got mine, that's how the dealer wanted to sell it to me, but I already knew the truth from this forum, lol. |

106,000 miles and NO issues. Get the CRD, or WAIT until 2014 and get a new CRD Wrangler! That's what Im waiting for. |

Wrangler diesel will happen for sure, but I have a hunch it will cost over 40k and will be mostly a Rubicon option. May be available way later than 2014. But a wrangler diesel is something I'd definitely be interested in. There is another thing, I read an article that due to the new fuel consumption regulations wranglers may drop the solid axles that adds too much weight and contributes to bad mileage... Which would be stupid. But that may be another reason a wrangler diesel would make sense. |
