I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD and the ETC light has been on and off since i bought the jeep a couple of months ago. The only thing it does is it seems to drop the throttle down when it come on but then i just push on the pedal up and down and it seems to preform like normal. Only twice has the jeep shuttered for a sec the CEL light comes on for a sec and then both lights go off. I have read the threads and I took to a dealer today and they charged me $149 to tell me that they need and $500 to go throught the wireing harnes to test for a short and then said that I might have to replace the ECM. I might try and go the glow plug route but am looking for any thoughts.

Thanks,

Hans

That is the light that comes on when you use the brake and the throttle at the same time. I would check those first.

What Greasy Bob said^^^^Make sure you are not using the throttle pedal while resting the other foot on the brake pedal!

I doubt glow plugs would have anything to do with this problem.

Check your wire harness that routes along the firewall above engine. I had the same problem and secured the harness better and problem stopped. This was after the dealer replaced brake pedal and throttle sensor with no luck. The dealer will not look at your wiring harness until they replace all the things their service manual says to replace first.

If this is under some warranty protection, then maybe consider it but the ECU in these is pretty robust.
There have been the links between the TPS & the Glow plugs - largely brought about through the comms in the Can Bus.
It is perhaps more likely that replacing the glowplugs will rectify this matter than the ECU.
Did they advise which code(s) it threw? You also need to know the status of the code ie: hard code, soft or pending etc.
Can this be reproduced? - these particular messages can often be data logged as they often re-occur under fairly std repeatable conditions The particular data set that needs to be logged (simultaneously) and played back out of the vehicle is:
TPS (throttle position sensor) (all banks)
Coolant temp
IAT (intake air temp)
GPDC - Glow plug duty cycle
B+ volts
Calculated engine load

It's often worth keeping the Data logging running after you would expect GP's to have shut down as they cycle run to improve
fuel burn.

Sadly this is an issue with lack of experience and the "text book" servicing process as most of these indicate the replacement of parts (although they should have access to a known good component for testing purposes) before you have to part with your hard-earned.

All the other comments made in your thread definitely would need to be considered.

Does the flashing lightening bolt switch off if you shut-down, wait a few seconds and then restart? If yes it is a soft code.
Not to be critical but there is a definite correlation between glow plugs and this ETC light. What it is I know not but it does seem to be remedied by replacement of GP's. Case in point. I had this recur in my car since new. It could not be pinned down. I waited to replace GP's until I actually got a GP specific code - it told me #1 was on the fritz. I replaced it and the problem ended for a whole season. It then came up for #2GP - I then replaced the rest. No more GP error codes or ETC lights.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the info, I know it is not the Gas pedal and brake at the same time as this light will come on just while driving on the freeway. The light does go away if i reset the key but then will sportically come on. For instance i was driving 300 miles on sunday and when i took a break and shut off the car the rest of the way home 100+ miles it did not come on. it will come on while idling, running, cold or hot. I think i am going to go with glow plug replacement and check the wiring harness. Any other thoughts would be good, the dealer suggested going through the wiring harness. The codes they pulled are:

" NO CEL ON AT THIS TIME. 4 STORED CODES. P2120 ACC PEDEL POSITION #1 LOW. P2125 ACC PEDEL POSITION #2 PLAUSABILITY. P0530 AC PRESSURE SWITCH. P0606 ECM CHECKSUM ERROR/ DEVIATION ERROR. INSPECTED PEDEL SENSOR WIRING. OK. NEED PIN CHECK."

I wonder if they can't spell pedal?

Thanks,

Hans

Problem solved. I pushed hard against the ecu and the wiring harness along the back wall. Once in a while the light comes back on and all i have to do is stop and push on the harnes and boom its fixed.... Next time it happens i am going to see if i can narrow down what connection is loose.
