Post subject:  Ambient temperature vs engine temperature
Should I notice a difference in my engine temperature with changes in the weather? Now that the weather has cooled off my engine runs noticeably cooler ( by the guage). Is this normal or is there a problem with my thermostat?

Sounds like your t-stat is bad. It should read read the same whatever the ambient temp. I've driven in sub-zero F and my operating temp is good after warm-up. Stop and let it idle and the engine temp will drop

FWIW, I keep a Stant inline stat on shelf in case my OEM stat goes out during winter.

I cannot speak for extreme northern cold but that's not an issue in SC. If your tstat is failing as soon as ambient drops down to much below 70F and you no longer run AC if the temp gauge doesn't get to slightly left of dead vertical your tstat is gone or going, been there done that. I can say with a good tstat and ambient say 25F that the temp gauge takes longer to get to that barely left of dead vertical but it gets there in like 8 miles instead of 4, in town driving.

In line is "ok" for a short term cheap fix in the winter but I'm not a bit fan, sorry for the bad pun, and prefer the OEM even if pricey for year round use pending receipt of Kap's mod.

It's definitely not reaching the " just left of verticle" position like it was during summer and the temps here are rarely below freezing. I guess that might also explain why my mpg has dropped by about 2. I'm due a timing belt. Guess I'll plan on a thermostat also.

I agree with tj2 and papa, it seems your thermostat is messed up... you should only see an issue with running cooler if the temps drop below 10 degrees, so driving in city (no highway) for over an hour, my temp on the gauge didn't move over 3/8, but outside were probably 5 degrees that day. All these with a thermostat replaced that fall. Left the car started for about 1.5 hours, the temp stayed to 1/4. Its normal for a diesel imo. When its below 15, I jump in the Cherokee, that thing heats up in a heart beat.

For sure it takes a lot longer to get up to normal temp when its cold out. But it should get to just a tick left of 1/2. I have noticed it takes longer to heat up if your in start and stop traffic.

For sure the OEM stat is a problem in the CRD. The second worse design behind the EGR system. Don't waist your money on a new OEM, some people have had several failures, wasting time & money.

It's been low 30's to mid 20's at my place for a couple days now, and I barely reach operating temp by the time I get to work (15 minutes, all highway) where before it was reaching operating temp halfway to work. I have an inline thermostat (have for 10k miles and it's worked fine) but as soon as it got cold outside it was like a light switch was flipped extending my warmup time.

I'm going to make some panels to block off the grill a bit, I've read about people on here doing that with some winter success. Seems to work for semi's. :D

With city driviing at temperatures -5°C or lower mine goes up and down like a yoyo.

At similar temperatures on the highway it takes 10-15 minutes to reach operating temperature but can hold it there as long as you keep the speed up. As soon as you stop it drops like a brick.

This has been my observation from new and with the replacement 'stat when the original broke so I believe this is normal behaviour.

Temps here today in the mid 60's. After driving 20+ miles the temp never got higher than halfway between the quarter and half mark. Most of the time it was just above the quarter mark. Time for replacement.

Yep, your tstat is shot. Swap as soon as possible. I've been running the inline one for about 45000 miles and no problems yet
