I am a new owner and need some help. The check engine light came on today, I have cleaned the MAP sensor and done the EHM about 5 days ago. today while driving it the light came on. What would be some of the reasons for it to come that I can check. It has 111,000 miles and to my knowledge the timing belt has not been changed. I don't have a scan tool. so I don't know what codes it is throwing. Any help would be thankful, Bruce

There are a million reasons. Most dealerships will scan it for free because they think you'll give them the work.

I would suggest getting it scanned and reporting back, it could be any of a myriad of things of which I'll not even begin to guess. Don't guess with your $5500+ engine, be sure.

Most allow you to cycle the key on and off three times very fast leaving it on the last time, and it will give you the offending code on the instrument panel where the mileage is shown. Then just Google the code for a description. :google:
Then you can ask how to fix it!

Best to change that timing belt soon!

What year model is your KJ?. Early models up to about 2005 you could do the key trick to get codes:

Turn ignition ON/OFf rapidly 4 times....do not start the engine.....leave it ON after the 4th time.

If you get it right then the odometer will show you what codes have been stored...oldest codes first and newest codes last.
It takes some trial and error to get this right...sometimes it works with 3 ON/OFF attempts and sometimes 5!

Bear in mind that this does not clear codes and the oldest codes could have been there for years and are no longer of interest. Also bear in mind that this method of getting codes sometimes transposes the last two digits so a code of P0152 may actually mean PO125 for example. :?

Like your surname by the way! :)

Thanks for the replies, It must have been a hic-up, no EL on now, I will keep a close watch on it and will do some PM's on it.

Bill, my grandfather was a Scot, he came to NA from Scotland, and as far as I know, the son means the son of William. South Africa, wow, Bruce

X infinity on doing that timing belt ASAP if not sooner if you are not absolutely positive it's been done given your current miles. Just pulled the original off an 06 at 106,000 miles and most all the teeth had hairline cracks at the base.

My surname as well...and my first name is William.....if I had a son and called him William he would have grown up very confused!
