Post subject: | Feeler: Take a trip to CA, do my timing belt and more? |
Hi all, I'm at 73k miles now, had the Jeep since 68k+ (bought and drove it across the country in September). I am very aware that my TB needs doing, but I do not know of reputable CRD mechanics in the area. I just found out that my trusted VW TDI mechanic, who I would trust with anything, is moving on to a dealership job and is no longer an option for this job. While I can do some routine maintenance items like filters, oil, MAP cleaning, etc., a timing belt is beyond my technical ability and tool collection. We also just had a baby and I simply don't have the time to work extensively on the car or drive long distances (though I may have to do this). I'm writing to ask if any of you CRD gurus (Sir Sam, Geordi, papaindigo, MRausch82, Racertracer, DOC4444, flman sorry if I've missed anyone) would be interested in flying/driving out to California (or I fly you out), having a place to stay for a few days, plus labor at an agreed rate for the following (I may edit as I think of other items): - Full Timing belt job (water pump, idlers/rollers, etc.) - Hayden Fan clutch - fuel/oil filters, oil change and other fluids (differentials, transmission?, radiator?, others?) Other items to be decided on/addressed if needed: - potentially rockers (though my MAF reading is doing alright at ~17.4 g/s near sea level) - ARP studs, only if doing some of the above or if there appears to be a head gasket issue (while coolant was a little low when I purchased, it does not seem to have gone down since I topped it off with G-05 about 1k miles ago, and the cold engine/cap pressure test does not indicate a head gasket leak. UOA was also free of water or coolant residues.) - Intake cleaning? - If you look at my original thread, I am not thrilled with my fuel economy and am not sure if it is simply that the TB needs to be done or indicative of greater problems. See my fuelly log for details. Of course, the major issue with this will be: getting all your needed tools here to do the job, working in a condo driveway (I've had work on my TDI done there with not many issues as far as neighbors, etc.), figuring out if it is worth the time/cost for both of us, etc. Ideally, I would like to get this work done at around 75k, which I expect to be sometime in the spring. Let me know if there is any interest, or if you can recommend someone local. Otherwise, I may have to take a vacation to Colorado and see Sir Sam. Thanks for considering. |
